FROM UPAW......NAA members...we're making inroads on defeating this bill but not there yet. PLEASE read this communication from UPAW and take action...

SB1248 was rolled over to next Tuesday!!!

It was NOT voted on!

Together we ARE helping to stop this!

Your persistent calls, emails, postings to social media and spreading the word helped make a difference!!!
Some Senators received over 500 calls & emails from us!

We can NOT stop now!!!

Senator Gresham, the sponsor of the bill, is calling us 'VIGILANTES'.
You can watch the video of the session at:view_id=250&clip_id=7778
Scroll down to SB 1248 in the index section.

Next Tuesday, April 16, SB 1248, known as the 'Ag-Gag or Anti-Whistleblower' Bill will be voted on by the full Senate.

Find out who represents you here:
Please ask them to VOTE 'NO' on SB 1248!!

It is imperative we put a stop to this bill.

If your State Senator is GRESHAM (or even if she's not), she is the sponsor of the bill, so let her know that her bill does not protect abuse against livestock as she suggests. Documentation over a period of time is required to get a conviction. Is she aware of the fact that the TN Walking Horse industry denied for decades that soring was taking place & that it was only when officials failed to act that an undercover investigation began? Had this bill been law last year, the investigation wouldn't have been able to progress since investigators would have had to turn evidence over to law enforcement within 24 hrs & would not have had the ability to show repeated abuse to build a non-refutable case. Additionally, the largest meat recall in US history occurred due to an undercover investigation in California after downed cows entered the food supply & affected the school lunch program. Senator Gresham, we don't understand how these investigations were done by 'vigilantes' as you call us.....they were done by responsible, well-intentioned, caring people who were forced to investigate since law enforcement was unwilling or unable to do so. SB 1248 is designed to make it more difficult to prove abuse. This bill does NOT protect abuse against livestock.
If your State Senator is CAMPFIELD, BELL, GARDENHIRE, GREEN, OR STEVENS, they have voted in favor of this bill in the past, so we need to send them stern, but polite messages that we'd like them to oppose this bill.
If your State Senator is NORRIS,KETRON,KELSEY,FINNEY, or DICKERSON, please thank them for opposing this bill and ask for their continued support.

As a recap:
This bill states that a photo or video depicting cruelty to animals must be turned over to law enforcement within 24 hours, and while this may sound like a good idea to some, it is not. This bill is meant to curb the influx of photographs and videos that animal advocates collect to expose cruelty that otherwise would never be seen. One photograph or one video generally is not enough to obtain a conviction of animal cruelty, and thus, even if this evidence is turned over to law enforcement immediately, the allegations may not be taken seriously and the alleged crime may not even be investigated. Where does this leave the animals? Or the person who turned in the evidence? This bill blows the whistle on the whistleblower and is detrimental to investigations; it must be stopped. This bill does not protect animals but rather the perpetrators of animal abuse.

A personal call is best but you can use an action alert if youprefer: https://secure.humane...

Farm Bureau is also lobbying hard in favor of this, so if you have insurance with Farm Bureau, you might want to make your voice heard with your insurance company. Lacey Upchurch is the president.y-upchurch

Please post on your Facebook and send to your contact list. Call in that favor from your friends to help. Get together this weekend over wine.....a cup of coffee.....catch up with your friends & make those phone calls & emails. We must get this message to everyone who cares about animals to join in and get this message viral.

Don't underestimate your influence.
This could be the home stretch on HB 1248.
Please let us know of any responses you get. Thank you!

Many thanks to Humane Tennessee PAC and Payton Robbins for assistance in crafting key speaking points.
