March Meetup Recap

From: Jeff D.
Sent on: Tuesday, March 18, 2014 11:26 PM

What a great time to be a creative in Nashville! We have six films in pre-production and at least one ready to start shooting (Go Team Corrupt!). This month, we are focused on finding locations, rounding out our crew and actors, figuring out our insurance, releases, and paperwork, as well as drawing up story boards, and securing props and gear.

Our March Meetup brought together a diverse mix of talent that discussed what makes a scene emotionally gripping. We shared an update on our films, more opportunities to get involved, and lessons learned.

Since most of us are still casting, there are still openings for actors and extras. Please contact each film's team leader to find out if you can still join a team if you are interested.

I was interviewed recently on the New Business Networking Podcast with Dave Delaney about our group. Check it out to get to know me more and hear about some of the behind the scenes thinking which led up to relaunching our group. You can also find the Podcast on iTunes. Make sure to give me a shout out in the comments and iTunes comments. Thank Dave for doing such a good job!

Marketing Your Films

Team Leaders, please send me your Director's name and a way we can follow along to your film's progress. If you have not considered behind the scenes content or social media, it's a great way to build an audience so when you finally do premiere it, people will eagerly want to watch it. Otherwise, your film will be a blip on people's email or social media feeds and then vanish.

I'm considering starting a Tumblr site for my film, and sharing via my personal social media on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. I'm avoiding creating a separate website domain and social media accounts because once it's finished I don't want to keep maintaining them. Remember to encourage everyone on your cast and crew to share via their social media accounts. They are your marketing team! (And don't forget to use the hashtag #nashfilm.)

We, of course, will promote your films at our and Facebook Group sites as well, but only if you share your links with me.

I was asked today about where to look for insurance for shooting days to cover liability if someone gets hurt or property damaged. Try these resources:
$25 Headshots

Actors need to have professional headshots taken to communicate their style and look. Everyone else should have one for their social media profiles anyway. Here's your chance! As a fundraiser for a film called Generation:HERO, Iluminating Talent is hosting a photo shoot on Saturday, March 29th, at 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. for $25. Schedule your session today.

It's rare to find something this affordable and you will be helping another film team. Email [address removed] to schedule a time and get all the details.

Make $60 Being Yourself This Saturday

If you are into motorcycles and tats, trucks and muscle cars. If you have the look of someone who would enjoy showing up to an underground fight club, a new film trailer is looking for you and your vehicles.

Email [address removed] for details on the Saturday, March 22nd shoot from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. You will be paid, fed and provided for all day, so tell your friends.

Social Happy Hour?

One of our members suggested holding a social happy hour at a local bar or restaurant in between Meetups. If you are interested in that, please respond to this email. We'll see what the interest level is and go from there.

We have officially had our last meeting at VIBE in March. For April, I cannot wait to announce where we will be meeting next. I've met with their CEO, worked out a good arrangement, and we are both thrilled with the possibilities.

Our new home will be perfect for us and much more film friendly. Let's just say it's the only place I know in Nashville with a green cyclorama (hint, hint).

Until next week,

Jeff Dolan
