Northeast Scala Symposium 2013 - Day 1

Registration and breakfast opens at 9AM. Come early for coffee, bagels, and muffins before the keynote begins at 10.

Our keynote speaker is Daniel Spiewak, who will give you a new respect and healthy fear of Scala's cake pattern in The Bakery from the Black Lagoon.

The full program of attendee-selected talks for Friday is posted at nescala.org. We also hope to see you at our Saturday unconference.

Drexel's Behrakis Grand Hall is walking distance from Amtrak's 30th Street station.

    Any slides posted yet?

    1 · February 11, 2013

    • Brian C.

Slides will, most likely, be posted when the videos are posted.

  • Neil S.

Any idea when videos of the talks will be posted?

    2 · February 11, 2013

    • Brian C.

The videographer will be shipping the raw footage to Marakana, who has offered to do the post-production. If it's anything like last year, Marakana will start to push the videos to us in a couple weeks. As we receive each video, we'll post it.

Hey folks. I was the idiot that left my (Apple MBP Retina) power charger at the space. Did anyone grab it? Is there someone I should coordinate with?

My fave conference. Very concrete. Instead of talking about the joy of programming, it provided recipes for how to do it better. I learned a lot!

Organizing the talks into subway lines is pretty clever. If I mention at least once that I'm transferring to the (A|B) I'll consider the day a success.

Getting inside the venue is a little tricky because of construction! Walking on Chestnut, you'll need to cross that street mid-block between 32nd and 33rd. It looks like this: http://www.meetup.com/nescala/photos/12419792/202767782/ Follow signs for Creese Student Center under the scoffolding.

For those flying in and needing transportation from the airport, I got a tip from the hotel where I'm staying today: Lady Liberty Shuttle. Rates to get downtown: $10/person. Call when you get to the airport (from courtesy phones). For comparison, I think he said taxi is $28.50. http://www.ladylibertyshuttle.com/

    ATTENTION FRIDAY PRESENTERS:

In order to produce a high quality video of your talk, we'll be helping you record a screencast on your laptop as you speak. We'll collect the resulting video file onto a thumb drive after your talk.

It would be helpful if you make sure you have screencast recording software installedon your laptop in advance, and also attempt a test recording ahead of time.

On OS X, use QuickTime Player. choose File —> New Screen Recording, then press the red Record button.

On Windows, CamStudio looks like a good free solution.

Anyone presenting on Linux and know what software to recommend?

    February 6, 2013

    • Thomas L.

I use ffmpeg or mencoder. I forget which. But I'll post a command when I get home.

Will videos be posted after the event?

    1 · January 28, 2013

    • Brian C.

I have taken photos (with my DSLR) at each of the NEScala events so far, and I plan to do so this year. I have obtained no releases, since the photos have not been used in any commercial way whatsoever. (That is, neither I nor NEScala has profited from those photos.) Further, if anyone ever objects to the inclusion of his or her photo on the Meetup page, we will gladly and promptly remove it. (No one ever has.)

While I am not a lawyer, I cannot imagine that anyone would ever sue the photographer or the organization over the posting of a photo from a large event on the event's Meetup page, especially when the photos are not used commercially.

      2 · February 1, 2013

    • Sam S.

Awesome. Thanks. And yeah, if anyone were to request no pictures please, before or after the fact, no problem respecting that. For my own purposes I'd probably just be looking for the slide decks anyways. :-)

      February 1, 2013

  • Brian C.

    THERE WILL BE VIDEOS.

(In case you're worried about missing one cool talk, because you're going to the other cool talk that runs at the same time.)

We've selected our videographer, and Marakana (the folks who did the outstanding videos from last year's NE Scala) will be doing this year's post-production.

There are two talks at this year's NE Scala Symposium that really ought to be in "smackdown" format:

    http://nescala.org/2013/talks#42 - "Programming isn't Math"
http://nescala.org/2013/talks#44 - "The Mathematics of Programming"

I mean, COME ON! This sounds like an awesome and great discussion! Bring on the battle royale!

    1 · January 14, 2013

    • Gershom B.

I think we can all agree that there is a bijection between math and programming. The only apparent controversy, which seems to me quite minor, is that some may dispute that there is also a bijection between programming and math.

      3 · January 15, 2013

    • Daniel S.

Given the origins of this discussion, it might be safer to say that we agree there is a bijection between programming and math, we simply don't agree on the definition of "bijection". ;-)
