Net2NO Summer Spectacular Recap for July 10, 2012

From: Adele T.
Sent on: Wednesday, July 11, 2012 11:36 AM

Thanks again to everyone who made it out to last night's meetup. We had a great turnout, and hope you enjoyed catching up with regulars as well as so many new people.

On a side note, we were inspired by one of our presenters to finally get a Google+ page setup for Net2NO - now all we need are a few followers ;)

Net2NO Needs a New Home!

The 12 Bar on Fulton recently announced that they have been purchased. The management that has been so supportive over the past year has been amazing to work with and we wish them the best of luck. BUT that means we need a new spot to host our Net2NO monthly meetings.

Here are a few considerations:

  • We were born in the back of a bar, and bars have been good to us over the past few years
  • A location that is convenient to get to
  • Free space, with the promise of a thirsty crowd
  • Easy to park near is nice
  • Must be available on the first Tuesday of the month

If you have any suggestions, please forward them to [address removed].

BarCamp NOLA is THIS weekend! If you have not already registered DO IT NOW at http://www.barcampnola.com! What IS a Bar Camp? Well, according to Wikipedia, BarCamp is “an international network of user-generated conferences (or unconferences) primarily focused around technology and the Web. They are open, participatory workshop-events, the content of which is provided by participants.” Attendees are STRONGLY encouraged to top present or help with a session. Don't be intimidated by this, just pick something you're passionate about and come give a talk on it. It could be anything... an operating system you use, a language you program with, or how to wash your cat. Still not convinced? Don’t worry about presenting, just come to learn and network. You won’t be sorry. BTW, did we forget to mention it’s FREE! So now what’s your excuse?

GOOD Ideas for New Orleans, an event hosted by Neighborland and AIGA will take place at the New Orleans Museum of Art on Thursday, July 12th. Locals come up with creative solutions to problems that plague our city. For 3 months, local teams have been working to find solutions. For teams, proposed projects, and event details, visit http://goodideasfornola.eventbrite.com/.

Mr. Legs Fundraiser for Bridge House set for Saturday, July 14. Yes a party with a purpose. thanks to Steve Carnes, the newest recruiter for Robert Half Technology in New Orleans for sharing this part pageant, part parody event. Tickets are still available and include food from local restaurants and drinsk - click here for details or to purchase. Just incase your weekend needed that one more event to put it over the top

Google New Orleans is HERE! We’re excited to welcome Google to New Orleans. First we meet Alison Zink, the new Community Manager for Google+ Local and Zagat for the city. Alison will be working on generating awareness and engagement in Google+, specifically in the Google+ Local product (formerly Google Places). She'll be organizing some fun (and mainly free) events around the city for Googlers, so be sure to follow @GoogleNOLA on Twitter and sign up for the Google New Orleans Newsletter for the latest updates on Google events, contests and more. Alison also works on supporting the Zagat Survey here in New Orleans (Google bought Zagat last fall and has since made all of its information free to the public on both Zagat.com and Google+ Local). The Zagat Nightlife Survey is currently live for New Orleans. If you have a moment to take the survey, you can enter here to win three free tickets to Tales of the Cocktail! Please feel free to get in touch with Alison about any questions, issues or suggestions you have for Google in New Orleans. Her email is [address removed], and she can be found on Google+ here.

A loftier goal was presented by the “other” Googler, Samuel Bowler, who spoke of the social entrepreneurial plans that Google is outlining. The plan is to involve partner non-profit organizations and local businesses. Plans are in the works with six area universities to select college students that will serve as ambassadors to the selected partners. For the coming year, the local Google office along with the selected students, will be working to increase the visibility of these businesses and organizations in an effort to leverage the exposure that New Orleans will receive during the Super Bowl in early 2013.

Google has plans to hold an event in November geared toward helping local businesses prime their online profiles and placement, just in time for this major international event. If you or someone you know is interested in attending this event, visit http://www.gybo.com/louisiana/ to be alerted as soon as details become available.

The Main Event

We invited everyone to share something that inspired them about the local tech community. To share stories about the people that they admire for their tenaciousness, or to just tell us what they love about New Orleans.

We will be postings the comments that we received to our Tumblr account. If you have not yet submitted yours from this evening, please send them to [address removed] in order to have them included.
