October 17, 2012 Meeting of MCA-i:
How To Make A Documentary—Behind The Scenes Of “The Brick People”
AND Tour the Buddy Group/DotLot Studios!
Meet the filmmakers and learn firsthand about everything from acquiring rights to shooting formats and finding a crew!
You’ll also get a chance to tour the Buddy Group/DotLot Studios, one of OC’s hidden gems! The film, “The Brick People,” is based on a book of the same name and took seven years from concept to completion!
You’ll get the fascinating details from Producer Art Kirsch; director-editor Mike Kirsch as well as the author of the original book, Alejandro Morales and his daughter, Alessandra Morales-Gunz who is the film’s writer and narrator. http://www.amazon.com/The-Brick-People-Alejandro-Morales/dp/0934770913
They’ll discuss translating media forms and why they made a factual doc from a dramatic, narrative novel; how they raised money for production and the good and bad of crowd-funding for post production; tech and format considerations that challenged them; researching survivors and how they dealt with unexpected story changes in mid production; and a lot more—including answering your questions!
The Producer-Director team are father and son, Art and Mike Kirsch. Art is the founder/editor of http://www.SoCalShowbiz.com and has produced cinema-related live events as well as films. He has served as the Treasurer for the LA/Orange County Chapter of MCA-I and serves on the Board of the Media Alliance of Orange County. His son, Mike Kirsch, is a producer-director with well-known OC Production house, The Buddy Group. He has won numerous awards for his TV commercials and on-line video work.
Author Alejandro Morales based his story on the experience of his parents at the Simons Brick Plant #3 in what today is Montebello. His novel begins in 1892, with Rosendo Guerrero laying out the ground plan for the original Simons brickyard in Pasadena, California and continues through several generations of Anglo and Chicano/Mexicano families and their interactions in Southern California in the first half of the twentieth century. It is the saga of two clans: the Simons and the Revueltas families, representing the capitalist and working classes respectively.
Our host for the evening is THE BUDDY GROUP / DOT LOT http://www.thebuddygroup.com is one of OC’s premier creative agencies/production companies. Describing themselves as a digital engagement agency, they offer content creation, audience tracking, interactive design, graphics/animation as well as video production and studio rental under the name DotLot.
