Building Accessibile Websites - Andrew Macpherson

In February's NWDUG talk we heard about Sunil Peck's experiences of using the internet as a blind person.
Following on from this, we'll take a look at some simple approaches which we can use to make our websites more accessible. We'll look at some common pitfalls, learn how they can be avoided, and hopefully bust a few myths along the way. The aim is to help designers and developers get started on the road to building more accessibility into daily practice.

  • How the use of colour affects web accessibility.
  • The keyboard-only experience, and the importance of focus styles.
  • Discover how the use (or mis-use) of CSS and Javascript can help accessibility - or hinder it.
  • Learn about various ways of interacting with a web page using a screen-reader.
  • Find out what "semantic" HTML really means, and why it's at the core of the accessible experience.
