What we’re about

Backgammon players of New York: NYC Backgammon is the largest group of active and participating members in NYC; meeting great people to play with has never been easier.  New York City Backgammon was founded in April, 2008.
The main meetup is held once each month on a non-fixed Wednesday night and is typically scheduled about one month in advance and listed on this Meetup page. If you don't see one here, it isn't scheduled yet. Please do not contact the organizers to ask when the next event will be. Set your account to receive our emailed event notices so you don't miss a meetup. (see instructions at the bottom*). The meetups run from 6pm to approximately 10:00 pm. Attendance varies between 20-40 players. People can come and go as they like for casual play. Most months, a group lesson is given at around 7:45. Occasionally, a tournament will be held starting at 7:00 instead of the lesson. Any tournament will be announced in advance.
Location is downstairs at:

Josie Wood's Pub
11 Waverly Place, New York, NY

Group Dues
There is a small $5 per YEAR dues fee to participate in this group. That helps to cover our meetup.com fees and to ensure that boards and other equipment are available for players. It also helps to keep imposters out of our group who have no interest in coming to our events but will harass our members online.

There are various modes of play available through NYC Backgammon.
"CASUAL MATCHES"
Open play against one and all. Members pair off to play and switch opponents as desired. You can play individual games or short matches. Play with the doubling cube or without. Everyone can find a game and have fun. Some of our members enjoy playing 'heads-up' or chouette for low stakes. You can ask around to see who might be interested in this.
"CLINIC MATCHES" - Improve your game
Offered at most monthly meetups at Josie Woods; Richard Munitz, organizer, two-time American Backgammon Tour champion, and ranked three times in the top 32 "Giants of Backgammon" in the world, will play clinic matches, in which his opponent and spectators will have the invaluable opportunity every step of the way to learn the in-depth strategy and logic behind the game.
"TOURNAMENTS"
Occasional meetups at Josie Woods Richard Munitz will hold tournaments. These will be announced in advance on the event and perhaps by email. Registration deadline 6:45pm, with play starting promptly at 7:00. The tournament is typically single elimination, with match lengths chosen so that the final match will be completed by 10:30. Participation is optional, you may attend for casual match play with players not involved in the tournament if you bring your own board; all our group's backgammon boards will be in use for the tournament.  Tournament meetups will not include the clinic matches.
NOTE TO NEW MEMBERS: bring a board if you have one, or just show up, we do have extra boards available. Introduce yourself to an organizer; to get you started we'll find someone to pair you up with for your first match. After your first match, please feel free to seek out available players to meet and play, throughout the night, just ask if someone would like to play.
