Backgammon players of New York: NYC Backgammon is the largest group of active and participating members in the NYC; meeting great people to play with has never been easier. New York City Backgammon was founded by Rod Covlin, April 8, 2008 with an inaugural group comprised of nearly 50 players. At a current membership of over 800 members, NYC Backgammon is not only the largest group of participating and active backgammon players in New York, it is the largest Backgammon Meetup in the world!
The main meetup is held once each month on a Tuesday evening from 6pm to approximately 11:30 pm. Attendance varies between 20-50 players. People can come and go as they like for casual play (the main meetup is not held tournament style)
Location is downstairs at:
Josie Wood's Pub
11 Waverly Place, New York, NY
There are various modes of play available through NYC Backgammon.
Open match play against one and all. Members pair off as desired, pick up a match score sheet, agree on a match length such as 5 or 7 points, complete the match. After each match is completed players may seek other available members for a new match. Some of our members enjoy playing 'heads-up' for money. You can ask around to see who might be interested in this, or the organizers can help direct you.
"CLINIC MATCHES" - Improve your game
Offered at most meetups; Richard Munitz, organizer and ranked from 2007-2011 in the top 32 "Giants of Backgammon" in the world, will play clinic matches, in which his opponent and spectators will have the invaluable opportunity every step of the way to learn the in-depth strategy and logic behind the game.
3-5 Player Chouettes form at will for stakes the group is comfortable with (Ranging from $0.25 to $5 or $10 per point) This is a fun and exciting variation of backgammon in group format, with a more social element, as well as a great opportunity to learn from other players. Be ready to use the cube.
Occasionally members living outside of Manhattan will volunteer to become event hosts for regular smaller backgammon meetups convenient to those in their area. Currently we have a monthly Westchester meetup. Other members wishing to host in their own area are welcome to contact the organizers to volunteer to become an event host.
NEW MEMBERS: bring a board if you have one, or just show up, we do have extra boards available. Introduce yourself to any one of the four organizers; to get you started we'll find someone to pair you up with for your first match. After your first match, please feel free to seek out available players to meet and play, throughout the night, just ask if someone would like to play.
