What is beer but liquid bread? And bread = food. So therefore, beer = food, and this ride fits within the scope of the group. For what it's worth, the beer garden also serves some pretty tasty food - kielbasa, pierogies, etc. Shamelessly copying this idea from one of my assistant org's last rides, because it worked out well and was a lot of fun. http://www.bohemianh all.com/home.htm Once again, route is tbd, but we'll start at the Williamsburg bridge again (Brooklyn side bike-path entrance on the north side, S 5th Pl). Meet at noon, depart no later than 12:10. Thinking scope will be about the same as last ride: around 20 miles. Guidelines: You're comfortable riding in nyc traffic and can maintain an average speed of 15mph. We can't get there too late as lines start to form to get inside - it's a popular place! It may be very hot - like last time :). Bring water. Very important: bring a lock if you want to drink! They don't let you bring bikes into the beer garden. You have to plan your own way of getting home from Astoria. If you drink, you may want to make plans to take the subway home - I don't recommend drinking and biking. $5 deposit (+Amazon's fee, $0.32) required, pay online. When you show up, I will give you $5 in cash. If you don't show up, you lose your deposit.

Trying to kick this group back into existence. Let's do this. I have no idea what the route will be - I think we'll wander around Brooklyn a bit - maybe put in 20 miles - and then end up at the Red Hook Ballfields. If for some reason the vendors are not out, we'll find somewhere else to eat. http://events.nytime s.com/2006/08/23/din ing/reviews/23unde.h tml We'll try to keep a good pace. Please RSVP only if you are comfortable with riding in traffic. $5 deposit (+Amazon's fee, $0.32) required, pay online. When you show up, I will give you $5 in cash. If you don't show up, you lose your deposit.

It's been a while since our last event. Let's show the cold weather who's boss by getting on our bikes and taking a trip down to Jacques Torres in DUMBO for some chocolate (hot or otherwise, though the Wicked Hot Chocolate is a must-try). Also, if you know someone who likes chocolate, this will be a great opportunity for some last-minute holiday shopping. This is a one-way ride to Brooklyn - getting home is your responsibility. WHO: cyclists who can deal with a little cold weather, have experience riding in city traffic, can keep up a moderate (not necessarily fast) pace, and like chocolate-based products WHAT: chocolate at Jacques Torres WHEN: Sunday Dec 17th, 2pm WHERE: meet at the above time at Washington Square Park, north side, at the arches. (Same as last ride.) I'll be waiting at the arches with my red KHS track bike. We'll depart at 2:10 or so, take the west side bike path down and the Manhattan bridge over to DUMBO. WHY: Hot chocolate seems very season-appropriate, and Jacques Torres does it right.

We'll meet in Washington Square Park at the arch on the north side of the park, bike down through Manhattan, over the Brooklyn Bridge and into Red Hook by the ball fields. At the corner of Clinton and Bay street, we should find a nice selection of food from street vendors. This is mainly Central American fare. I recently tried this for the first time, and it was great -- the food was phenomenal and the people were very friendly. Finding vegetarian food was challenging at times, but totally doable -- everyone there was very helpful even when I asked them annoying questions. http://events.nytime s.com/2006/08/23/din ing/reviews/23unde.h tml Note for beginner/rusty cyclists: unlike last ride which was almost entirely on a greenway, we'll be doing the majority of riding on the streets in Manhattan and Brooklyn. I'll avoid busy streets as much as possible, but there will be certain segments that involve heavy city traffic. Here's the route (not set in stone): http://www.gmap-pedo meter.com/?r=411023 (Thanks go to Peter S. for the ball fields suggestion.)

We'll be riding about 8 miles, from Grand Army Plaza (the north tip of Prospect Park) down to Coney Island for some of the best pizza in the city, Totonnos (1524 Neptune Ave). This is a relatively easy ride with most of the route being on greenways. We should be able to make it under an hour, even at a relaxed pace. Note that this is a one-way ride. If you are intimidated going back solo, the F, Q, and D subway station is on nearby Stillwell Avenue. If you just want to meet us for pizza, show up at Totonno's around 3:00pm. (Can't say for sure if we'll be there earlier or later, though.) It's at 1524 Neptune Ave in Brooklyn. http://www.totonnos. com/ Here's (roughly) the route we'll be taking: http://www.gmap-pedo meter.com/?r=304872 (If the above doesn't work, try this: http://files.meetup. com/291209/totonnos_ route.jpg) Cyclists: please bring a pitch kit and/or extra tubes. Or be prepared to walk your bike to the nearest subway if you get a flat. :) And of course, bring enough cash to chip in for the pizza, if you're eating.
