Presentation: Typography for the Web

Webfonts, or custom typefaces used online, have infiltrated all levels of Web and mobile design. Many major brands, from the New York Times to Twitter, have traded in their Times New Roman and Verdana for typefaces from leading type foundries, such as Adobe, Monotype Imaging, and FontFont. Jaron Rubenstein of Rubenstein Technology Group will present a comprehensive overview of webfonts, covering all of the details you'll need to make use of this new technology in your next Web or mobile project. Whether you're a designer or developer, this presentation is for you and will include: Designing and prototyping with webfonts, the technology behind the scenes, webfont and mobile font licensing, webfont foundries and distributors, HTML/CSS coding with webfonts, samples of webfonts in use, and common issues encountered when using webfonts and how they can be resolved.

Jaron Rubenstein is President of Rubenstein Technology Group, a web and mobile software development firm that partners with leading creative firms to build high-end websites and software for web, mobile, and desktop platforms. For over a decade, Jaron has focused on implementing creative for industry-leading organizations in a wide array of verticals. Jaron also leads product development for the Ruby Business Platform, a comprehensive suite of web software that enables clients to manage their online presence.

About as exciting as Web Fonts are entitled to be. We tend to forget that fonts aren't free, there's a fee for using them. Good to know.

Being my first meetup with the NYC Web Design Group, it was pretty interesting. Typography is one of those side interests of mine, and I wanted to see how it was progressing in the web domain. The information that Jarod gave was a good foundation to start fiddling with web typography. As a low-level developer attending a high-level meeting, it wasn't as much about the intricacies or "gotchas" as I would have liked (but then again, it seemed like with a lot of the more popular, paid, hosted services, they would take care of the various details for you). Overall, it was interesting, and I'll probably be exploring web fonts more in the future.
