Sebastian MacLochliann leads the Dempsey's Session
Details
We're scheduling a special meetup at Dempsey's (http://www.dempseyspub.com/) on this night for our own Sebastian MacLochliann's first-ever guest session leader appearance at the Tuesday night session.
Sebastian is a super talented tenor banjo and octave mandolin player from Buncrana in Donegal. He's made quite a name for himself on the local music scene since arriving from Ireland a few yehttp://photos2.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/5/1/6/0/event_234080832.jpegars ago, playing in Pogues tribute band Streams of Whiskey (http://www.reverbnation.com/streamsofwhiskey) as well as in the folk rock trio East River Crossing (https://www.facebook.com/eastrivercrossing), which is currently in a two-week residency at the Ri Ra Irish Pub in Las Vegas. But he'll be back in town on this night to lead the Dempsey's session. Those of you who've been with us for a while will remember that Seb also sat in with the Dublin City Ramblers at the concert we put on a few years back.
In addition to being a talented musician, Sebastian is also one of the top young artists in New York, Irish or otherwise. You can view some of his work HERE (https://sebastianmaclochliann.see.me/).
We'll meet starting at 7 for drinks, food and conversation, the music starts at 8.
The Dempsey's session is the longest-running open traditional Irish session in New York, now in its 15th year of Tuesday night tunes and craic. All are welcome, from beginners to intermediate to advanced session musicians and the session is a good mix of all three. Sean nos and ballad singers and folk musicians are welcome as well as the session uses a round-robin format where everyone gets a turn to start a tune or sing a song.
The welcoming, open spirit of Dempsey's is known in Irish music circles all over the world and it's not unusual at all for visiting musicians (or singers, or dancers) from the four corners of the earth to stop by for a tune on any given Tuesday night. In 2011, local indie filmmaker Paradox Smoke Productions even made a documentary about the Dempsey's session called "Beautiful People (http://www.beautifulpeopledocfilm.com/)."
For musicians, the session provides a friendly, supportive atmosphere to share your talents and develop your skills. For non-musicians, the session creates an atmosphere of Irish conviviality and craic that few local pubs can match.
Just a note, I won't be organizing a First Tuesday meetup for June due to work commitments that week, so think of this meetup as a replacement for that one.
Be there!
