Neo4j for Newcomers to Ruby on Rails: A Walkthrough

NYC Neo4j member Chris Grigg has graciously volunteered  discussing a site he recently launched this year, PhillyMetal.com.  After switching from PHP + MySQL to Rails 4 and Neo4j, Chris has learned quite a lot about hosting is own Neo4j powered web-app and is here to present lessons learned.

Specifically:

a) a short walkthrough about using Active Record with Neo4j.rb 2.3 (Neo4j 1.9 embedded)

b)  experiences with data modeling when moving from MySQL

c)  hosting setup and recommended practices

d)  back-ups and disaster recovery with Neo4j using your own VPS

e)  preview of what's with come with the new Neo4j.rb Gem

f)   cypher tips!

About Chris's Site, phillymetal.com

Phillymetal.com was built quickly in 2009 as a response to amazing shows getting poor promotion. Its primary goal is to spread the word about upcoming events but also serves as a reasonably complete history of the bands, shows, venues, and people involved with the Philadelphia metal scene since its launch.

I really enjoyed the presentation and meeting other members. I learned a great deal about neo4j/ruby and how it compares to other languages. I look forward to the next one!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
