EDA, Visualization and Collaboration on the Web

  • August 7, 2012 · 6:15 PM

Please join us as we welcome Carlos Scheidegger from AT&T Labs as he presents his joint work with Simon Urbanek, also from AT&T Labs.

This talk will present ongoing work on an R-based EDA environment on a modern web browser. As organizations and businesses become more data-driven, EDA becomes increasingly important. In large organizations, sharing derived data, experiments, graphics and visualizations is still a hard problem, and is addressed mainly by stand-alone version-control systems. In contrast, we envision a system where users collaborate with each other fluidly, moving from a full-fledged R command prompt to integrated code search among all users to a simplified "pick your analysis, visualization and data" view. In this environment, sharing a new dataset, analysis or visualization should be as easy as creating it. We will show the current state of the tool via live demos.

As always there will be pizza starting at 6:15pm, though this time we will be trying something a little different.  Most people in this group know my affinity for pizza.  So for each meetup we are going to order from a different place and we ask that you answer a quick poll (probably through the Meetup iOS/Android app) on how you like the pizza.  After the talk, around 8:30pm, we'll head to the bar, most likely Central Bar.

I really enjoyed the talk and want to point one of my co-workers to it. Is there a video of the talk available?

No video, but I can try to find the slides.

Great talk! Looking to see more development from r-cloud. Can someone post slides + links? Thanks!

Great meetup. I had to leave a little earlier, so if this was mentioned, please excuse the asking this question again. Is there any plans to add more collaborative features (white-boarding) like elastic-r has? (http://www.elasticr.net/)

    August 8, 2012

    • Carlos S.

(Agh, commenting system doesn't like paragraphs. To continue:) The other nice things about elastic-r is its very tight integration with EC2. I confess that in my experience, I don't find myself wanting to collaborate through a shared session. Perhaps in an environment with a very large number of users, you can assume that enough people will be using it concurrently to justify a shared session. But at present, we want to get the "zero-effort sharing of source code and results" experience.

And it goes without saying that my impression of elastic-r might be wrong; I have not used it extensively at all.

It was very interesting and informative. I left with leads on several technologies that may be useful for my work.

Great meetup yesterday evening. Impressive presentation by Carlos Scheidegger. Thanks to Jared and others for making it happen. I missed the pizza though so I am with you W. Chen. Looking forward to the next meetup.

presentation had some cool stuff but the focus ended up on non-statistical/non-R topics like sockets, gpu libraries, etc. which are way over my head.

Is it starting at 6.15 or 7 pm? It says 7 pm in my mail. I work in Hauppauge, LI and would really like to attend. However there's no way I can make it by 6.15 pm. 7 pm by the skin of it. Someone please conform the time asap. Thank you.

I'm sorry, "EDA" is Exploratory Data Analysis, although I'm all for eating delicious appetizers.

(Surprisingly, google is of little help with the term. If you try "EDA Tukey" google will give you the right answer, but if you knew it had to do with Tukey, you probably knew what the acronym was anyway :))

    August 2, 2012

  • Iordan S.

I vote for the "appetizers" (EDA=?).

    August 2, 2012

  • Brian A.

it's either "eat delicious appetizers" or "exploratory data analysis"

    What the heck is EDA?

That must have been some sort of mistake. Fixed it. At AOL as per usual.

The "Address" shows "08/07/2012, New York, NY".

    July 19, 2012

Was some sort of mistake. Should be open again now. Sorry

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
