Announcing a new Meetup for New York Shutterbugs!

What: Off the Beaten Path: Jamaica Bay
When: (A date and time has not been chosen yet.)

Where: (A location has not been chosen yet.)

Next in the series of less-traveled locations we'll be visiting, the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge is a sprawling nature preserve spanning Over 9,000 acres. A well-known destination for nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers, there will be a wealth of plant and animal life for us to capture. Admission to the Refuge is free, and transportation is straightforward.

The Refuge is easily accessible by public transportation via:

  • A train to Broad Channel: When you get off the train, you'll walk straight ahead for 3-4 blocks to Cross Bay Blvd. Turn right, then walk along Cross Bay Blvd appx 1/2 mile to the Visitor Center.
  • Q21 or Q53 bus: The Q21 and Q53 go directly to the visitor center. If you live in Queens, esp. Howard Beach or Ozone Park, this might be your easiest bet. If you're coming from elsewhere and don't feel like walking from Broad Channel, you can take the A train to Liberty Ave/Rockaway Blvd and catch the bus from there.

I'm excited about visiting the nature preserve, but I've also always loved the quaint bay side community surrounding it. The walk from the train to the Visitor Center is sure to present some unique photo opportunities of its own.

Check it out!
