Machine Learning + NuoDB

This is going to be the one of the most intense machine learning big data events ever created in New York City.  We have an all star line up of speakers.

Food and Refreshments will be available.  Go up to the 8th Floor.

John Myles White, Co-Author of Machine Learning for Hackers

Talk Title: Machine Learning for Hackers

Abstract: In this talk, I'll review the basic ideas of machine learning and show how simple methods developed by researchers can be treated as black-box function calls by using several existing languages like R and Python. We'll work through the intuitions behind linear regression, logistic regression and k-nearest neighbors and show how they might be applied in common situations like spam classification.

About: John Myles White is one of the two authors of the book "Machine Learning for Hackers", published by O'Reilly. Currently, he is a Ph.D. student in the Princeton Psychology Department, where he studies decision-making. John is also actively involved in the statistical programming community and has written several popular R packages, including ProjectTemplate and log4r. His new primary interest is preparing the Julia language for use in statistical computing.

George Davis, Leading Data Scientist at Knewton

Talk Title:  Knewton Adaptive Learning Platform

Abstract: Knewton is a technology company that uses data to continuously personalize online learning content for individual students. Knewton analyzes data about the performance of each student and similar students on the platform, as well as the relevance of the educational content, in order to serve up the best activity for each student at a particular moment in time. The platform is continuously adaptive, meaning it responds in real time to each student’s activity on the system and adjusts to provide the most relevant content. The platform refines its recommendations through network effects that harness the power of all the data collected, for all students, to optimize learning for each individual student.

About: George Davis is data science tech lead at Knewton. His team develops scalable statistical models of the learning process in order to inform recommendations such as supplementary content or study groups. George holds a PhD from Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Computer Science, where he researched network analysis, game theory, and probabilistic graphical models as applied to problems in shipping, security, and economic networks.

really good talks, but would have loved to see some code. it was also quite long - two of those talks together would have been easier to keep people's attention.
