Data Management Applications with Drupal as Your Framework

by John Romine

Using the Drupal content management system as a development platform lets you build data management applications quickly, while leveraging the functionality of Drupal core and thousands of contributed modules.

In this talk, I'll describe writing code to implement a student tracking database application. This application takes advantage of core Drupal features including roles, permissions, content access control, form validation and processing, and templating. The system is built as a collection of related Drupal modules, taking an aspect oriented programming approach. This allows building a generic framework that supports different features for different academic areas (e.g., graduate vs. undergraduate students, or to meet varying needs of academic units).

Modelling an earlier PHP-based application, this system was originally written to track graduate student progress in the UCI School of Engineering, but has been expanded to several other UCI academic schools, and also extended to track undergraduate students, and provide automated academic probation tracking and notifications.
