FYI: This community is already transitioning to a post-oil economy

I thought the ABO Meetup (A-BOM? lol) might be interested in this update from a very well-organized and sizable group of citizens in Boulder, CO, that is already transitioning to a post-oil economy.

I’m constantly surprised by this group’s foresight, the sophistication of their economic model, and the level of community organization they have achieved in the last five years. They are even developing their own currency. There is amazing concordance among the group, yet they are not cultish. As I view them, although their community model seems radical in our society, the only novelties are the location and modernist adaptation of an age-old economic model.

Dear friends and neighbors,
Most of us involved in Transition work realize that just learning how to grow our own food and relocalizing our communities won't be enough. We also face an awesome internal transition that takes us into very unfamiliar territory and calls upon our deeper resources. This leads to the "heart and soul" work of the Transition movement.

Some in this community will remember when Carolyn Baker (author of the
Speaking Truth to Power weblog and daily news digest, and former managing editor of Michael Ruppert's "From the Wilderness" website) sat in circle with us last year for three days for a workshop with Tim Bennett and Sally Erickson, the producers of the extraordinary documentary film, "What a Way to Go: Life at the End of Empire." Her presence in that circle was a powerful contribution to our collective experience.

Sacred DemiseAt that time, Carolyn revealed that she was working on a new book, tentatively titled "The Spirituality of Collapse: Restoring Life on a Dying Planet." We eagerly discussed having her come back to Boulder once her book was published to facilitate a workshop for people involved in Transition. The book was finally published earlier this year as Sacred Demise: Walking the Spiritual Path of Industrial Collapse, and it carries my endorsement on the back cover. The foreword was written by ecopsychologist and Transition trainer Sarah Edwards (also the cofounder of a Transition Initiative in Pine Mountain Club, California), who says, "Sacred Demise is the first book devoted entirely to the psychological and spiritual aspects of today's economic challenges."

We're delighted that Carolyn will soon be in Boulder. She will be speaking publicly on Thursday, August 13 at Nomad Theater, at 7:00 p.m., and will facilitate two one-day workshops on that weekend (Aug. 15 and 16, Boulder Meadows Community Room), titled "Transition Heart and Soul: Preparing Emotionally and Spiritually for Life in a Post-Industrialized World." Registration is $69. (We booked two separate workshops to accommodate people's varying schedules.)

We find that Carolyn is a courageous, wise, and compassionate guide through the inner journey of Transition. Her gift is no easy prescription, but a rich and probing series of challenges that can only be met by the soul's deepest response.

Please join us for this "Transition Heart and Soul" workshop.

Carolyn Baker"Walking the spiritual path of collapse is a journey that beckons us far beyond mere survival and renders absurd any attempts to 'fix' or prevent the end of the world as we have known it. This odyssey is about the transformation of human consciousness and the emergence of a new paradigm as a result discovering our purpose in the collapse process and thereby coming home to our ultimate place in the universe. Our willingness to embark on the journey with openness and uncertainty offers an opportunity for experiencing the quantum evolutionary leap with which collapse may be presenting us. In other words, the opportunity collapse offers is an extraordinary death/rebirth phenomenon which could be tragically aborted if we persist in denial, rationalization, or resistance to civilization's demise." --Carolyn Baker
