Glass Pickup in Fort Greene Park
Details
Summary:
Stay up-to-date here (http://glassbench.wordpress.com/).
This is part 1 of 3 of the Third Annual Glass Pickup. The goal is to completely rid the park of the littered broken glass to make the park a safer place for us and our pets.
After the 2011 pickup we collected 50 pounds of glass. We're aiming for at least 150 pounds this time. Afterwards we'll all head to Walter's (http://www.yelp.com/biz/walters-brooklyn) for lunch and some drinks and to talk about the bench that will be made with the reclaimed glass.
What You Need to Know:
A map of the park will be provided that highlights the "hotspots" so we can focus on the problem areas. Several 5 gallon paint buckets will be provided by the Fort Greene Park office (thank you Carol!). We'll break out in to small groups, 4-6 people each, so we can cover the entire park simultaneously. Each group will have one 5 gallon paint bucket. Bring some drinking water to stay hydrated. If you can, bring a small "transport" container that you can use to carry with you and then empty into the big buckets each time it fills up; a chinese food takeout container would be perfect. This will just make things easer so you don't have keep walking back to the big bucket. Rain date: Saturday, March 31. Same time and place.
Big Picture:
The goal is to create a concrete bench out of the found glass. In June, we'll host an auction. The lucky winner will get to take home the unique bench that contains the glass collected from Fort Greene Park. We'll donate the proceeds to the Fort Greene Park Conservancy (http://fortgreenepark.org/). Everyone who participates in the glass pickup will have the their name listed on the plaque that will be imbedded in the bench.
Here's an example of what the concrete glass will look like:
