I hope everyone had a great weekend. To the members that have recently joined group (and to the members that limit their group participation to occasionally reading e-mails) welcome to the group! This group hosts a variety of events for black professionals throughout the bay area, but primarily in the Peninsula and the South Bay. We've been organizing social, business and professional events since 2007 (time really flies....). I say we because the Onyx is member-driven group (meaning that members are empowered to plan and host social, professional and community service oriented events). The goal of the group continues to be to create an avenue for black professionals to connect both professionally and socially. Since the point of this group (and Meetup more generally), is to “use the internet to get off the internet,” I hope that you will soon participate in events or volunteer to host your own events. The strength of this group is the energy and enthusiasm of its members. Also, if you have friends or family that would be interested in participating (especially the ones that lament the lack of black people in this area), please spread the word about the group. This group has grown and continues to grow through the power of word of mouth promotion and through the positive energy of its enthusiastic and down to earth members. The more, the merrier.
Oh, also another special heads up to newbies- if you are finding yourself overwhelmed by the number of emails you receive from Meetup please know that you can change your email settings. I wrote a page on changing email settings here and I think the instructions are still accurate.
Okay, on to the news....
The end of October is going to be happy hour-tastic. We have three great happy hours on the calendar- two in the Peninsula dedicated to two great causes and one in the city (the last Urban SF happy hour of the year for those of you who went to their amazing event at Sens in July). Check it!
This Thursday October 20th, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bay Area will host a fundraising happy hour at Zen Lounge in Mountain View. 100% of the door proceeds will provide much needed funds to BBBSBA to support youth mentoring programs for Bay Area kids. Details of the event are here but you can buy tickets online directly here.
This Friday October 21st, Urban SF will host a happy hour at the black owned gallery 144 King Street. Urban SF always draws a large group of black professionals. Plus there will be a DJ spinning hip hop Details are here.
Next Thursday October 25th, we will host an Adopt-A-Family Wine Tasting event at Savvy Cellars in downtown Mountain View (little nostalgia flashback for longtime members: photos from the times we went are here and here). Last year, we sponsored families in need for the holidays through Compass Family Services. Through the kind donations of several Onyx members, we ended up providing holiday gifts to two families in need and even hosted a gift wrapping party in the city. This year we want to continue the good works and since we have a bit more time to collect donations, we increased the number to five families. The profiles for each family are available here, here, here, here and here.
Ways you can help us out: you can come to the event on Thursday and contribute a cash donation or give us one of the items requested on the family profiles.
Onyx has two new sponsors- one sponsor is MBA@UNC; the other sponsor is Spool Me Rotten Threading Spa in Mountain View. I've been going to Natasha for eyebrow threading religiously for years and I'm always pleased with the services. Spool Me Rotten is offering a 20% for all first time services, which include threading, facials, and waxing. Just tell Natasha that you want the Onyx discount.
November event at MoAd---- The Art of the Suit
Last but not least, the Museum of the African Diaspora Vanguard is hosting an event on titled The Art of the Suit on November 3rd. Details are available here.
That's all for now. I hope everyone has a great week.
