DC SHARE Research Data Hackathon

Details

Hosted by the Center for Open Science (http://cos.io), SHARE's technical partner. SHARE is a collaboration between the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) (http://www.arl.org/), the Association of American Universities (AAU) (http://www.aau.edu/), the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) (http://www.aplu.org/), and the Center for Open Science (COS) (http://cos.io).

The Center for Open Science's (http://cos.io) SHARE team ( http://osf.io/share and http://www.share-research.org/ ) is holding a research data hackathon in Washington, DC! Join us to work on building free, open source software to improve research discovery, access, and reuse.

Starts on Saturday at 10am and Sunday at 9am.

Potential hack projects might include:

Harvesters

So far, we have over 42 content providers, and we need your help to add more! Have a favorite research aggregator or journal with an API with open metadata? Want to browse our list of APIs that have open research metadata? That's all you need to get started.

Data Analysis/Visualization

We have a nearly full Elasticsearch API, and have started developing a python library to facilitate analysis of SHARE data. You can help contribute to this library, including porting it to other languages (like R). You can also use the library to create interesting and meaningful analysis of the data, looking at terms, fields provided, etc.

Data Enrichment

We gather a lot of unique identifiers (DOI, urls, etc), which is an easy way to connect data from disparate sources. Using information like contributors, titles, descriptions, and sponsors to perform cross-provider analyses will allow us to enrich the data we are gathering. We can also pull information about authors and sponsors from third party websites (ORCID, Impact story, Altmetrics, etc), and add that data to the aggregate metadata for a document.

RSVP to show your interest and tentative availability to participate in this 2-day hacking event.

About SHARE

SHARE is a higher education initiative whose mission is to maximize research impact by making a comprehensive inventory of research widely discoverable, accessible, and reusable. To fulfill this mission SHARE is creating an openly available data set about research activities across their life cycle.

By collecting, connecting, and enhancing scholarly metadata, SHARE will simplify how various research activities and outputs—from data management plans and grant proposals to preprints, journal articles, and data repository deposits—can be identified as elements of a single research project.

By creating an open data set, SHARE will present opportunities for innovation in communication, visualization, and dissemination of information about research for the advancement of scholarship. Much of that innovation cannot be predicted in advance, and it would be impossible without SHARE.

SHARE is creating infrastructure to track and integrate reports of progress across the research life cycle, from proposals to execution to results. We will provide stakeholders with the information necessary to improve their workflows for tracking research outcomes, outputs, and impact. SHARE will harmonize how research outputs and their associated metadata are distributed, optimizing information sharing for funding bodies, institutions, and individual researchers. We will promote policies that will enable institutions to fully participate in, and benefit from, these infrastructure and workflow improvements.

SHARE is an initiative led by the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) (http://www.arl.org/) and founded with the support of the Association of American Universities (AAU) (http://www.aau.edu/) and the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) (http://www.aplu.org/). SHARE has partnered with the Center for Open Science (COS) (http://centerforopenscience.org/)for infrastructure development. SHARE is funded in part by a joint $1 million grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation (http://www.share-research.org/2014/03/imls-sloan-foundation-jointly-award-share-1-million-to-develop-notification-service/) for developing and launching SHARE’s first project, a notification service called SHARE Notify (http://www.share-research.org/projects/share-notify/).

Values

SHARE values openness and transparency. We realize our efforts can only be enhanced by the constructive input of interested stakeholders. We welcome community participation in our projects.

SHARE values international interoperability. As a North American initiative, we realize that we represent only a portion of the research effort across the globe. We look for opportunities to develop and adopt standards and practices that help knit the world’s research together into a more cohesive and accessible whole.

SHARE values simple and pragmatic solutions. We realize that the challenges we are tackling are complex and most solutions will be far from perfect. We look for the simplest approaches and prioritize incremental steps that can demonstrate practical benefit.
