Feeling brave? Then lets go to Gasper!!!

  • WAL MART PARKING LOT ON MORGANTOWN ROAD

morgantown road, Bowling Green, KY (map)

    37.026619 -86.562248

  • We will meet at Walmart on Morgantown Road. Look for brave men and women with boats!
  • This is not a beginners paddle by any means!

I'm not going to say you can't go, but if you don't have great boat control, and are scared of flipping over, do not attend this paddle! These will be CLASS II rapids we will be tackling!  If your looking for an adrenaline rush during kayaking, this is one to participate in! As of today, I'm going to schedule this as is, but please keep up with this post for any changes which can happen with Gasper because waters tend to rise fast and fall even faster. We are looking to have rain most of the day Thursday, so we should be good to make a run on Gasper Friday.  You MUST wear your PDF on this paddle. No exceptions! Spray skirts are recommended as well. You will get wet! We will be meeting at Wal mart on Morgantown road. We will take vehicles to the put in on 626 and shuttle some vehicles to the take out at 231 bridge. This will be a short paddle (6 1/2 miles), and there will be no break during.

Check the bridge gauge on the upstream side. If it is above 4', the river is very pushy and requires significant WW skill below Jackson Bridge (Hwy.626).

      It's 7 1/2 ft right now

Good call. You can get into trouble real fast out there today. Head to grab a bit to eat and hit it again in another 30 min-1hr

In the interest of safety and weather, I'm canceling this paddle. Sorry folks......we get there one day.

I'm fixing to go take a look at Gasper. I'll post shortly. Thanks for the info Powell. I had a feeling the take out was going to be a Mud Bog. I can only imagine what it looks like under the bridge.

rode by late yesterday. never done at high water before, but it looked like it should be good. however, take out and parking at 231 were a giant truck eating mud puddle, and that's before all the rain last night

I'm really hoping this is on for tomorrow. I can't go on Sunday, but I've heard other people talk about this trip and would love to go - preferably with someone who has run it before.

Put in on River rd today and paddled like 12 mile down to 626 take out. Not to bad. Had to drag over 2 log jams. Only got a little look down from 626. Glad it started to rain again so it comes back up tonight. Looking forward to paddle in some curls and playing around. See you on the water.

Joe, don't know if I'll be able to make it, but I'm going to try...just got back form the Nantahala...got rained out down there. One thing, if the Gasper is above 3' I would say that a skirt is pretty much mandatory...if not, recommend that you have some sort of floation device so the yak doesn't sink when iit swamps

So I just want to check. Joe do you have swift water rescue training and experience with running white water runs? I know KY white water is calmer than TN white water but I just want to check.

    July 3, 2013

    • Joe M.

I'm not certified to do anything. I've been down this run at low water, just right water, and flood stage. I've flipped twice, but never anything to keep me from going back. I'm going to check the water Thursday evening. If its WAY up, I'll postpone this till Saturday more than likely. Stay tuned.

as of 0930CDT on Thu 04Jul13 the river looked good for kayaking - high, moving, and muddy - but about 1ft too high and way too muddy for me to wade fish
