Scaling Digital Trends

For our next WordPress PDX Developers meetup, Brandon Clark, Web Developer at Digital Trends, will discuss the challenges that his company has faced when scaling their website. In Brandon's words:

"We've recently been told that digitaltrends.com is in the top 50 list of high traffic WordPress powered websites. People are often surprised to learn that our website runs WordPress and I am commonly asked how we were able to make it scale. In my talk I will share the behind the scenes story of developing the Digital Trends application, the mistakes we made, the problems we solved, and the various technology solutions we tried along the way. Custom plugins, server architectures, troubleshooting methods, and worthwhile technology partners will all be touched upon and I will happily answer questions. Perhaps sharing our experiences will help give you some ideas to grow your own WordPress site."

Sorry I missed it. Slides up yet?

The intended audience was really IT, not so much WordPress developers, so it mostly went over my PHP/MySQL/Javascript head.

The presentation was very informative and helpful, albeit a tad long. However, I would have felt cheated if Brandon would have deleted some of the information. I wish time would have allowed for even more in-depth discussion at various points.

I sent them off to Daniel so hopefully they will appear on pdxwp.com some time today.

Excellent discussion of topology and server issues when trying to scale a popular site. Lots of amazing details.

Thanks for the talk, Brandon. And the pizza and beer! Very informative and a lot to think about. Best takeaway was implied: how you continue to evolve the solution, using trial and error, and testing, testing, testing. Excellent!

Great topic, but the presentation was much too long. There was little to no time for us to connect to other developers.

I see it says 6:30pm to 9pm—that's 2½ hours. What's the agenda for the meeting look like, as I've never been before? I might have do duck out early.

It'll kick off about 6:45 with announcements, etc. Brandon will present between 7 and 8. After 8 is networking and collaborating.

Will the slides be made available for those of us with conflicts?

    November 9, 2012

    • Zack T.

If Brandon uses slides, we'll do what we can to make them available.

I will make the slides available after the meet up

I'm afraid this is a dumb question. What do you mean "how we were able to make it scale"?

    November 5, 2012

    • Mike B.

...you may have a setting in your Meetup profile that's on Eastern time.

Thanks, Mike. btw, I wasn't able to find any setting for time. no biggie.
