Want to grow delicious, healthy fruit without chemical sprays and other intensive management strategies? The Philadelphia Orchard Project is bringing orchard all-star Lee Reich to town to lead this exciting workshop, which will cover simplified fruit growing from a number of angles: fruit and varietal selection, soil, site, natural pest management, and a special focus on winter pruning. Morning classroom time will be followed by an afternoon of actual hands-on pruning of fruit trees, berry bushes, and fruiting vines at Awbury's agricultural village with the author of THE PRUNING BOOK.
Lee Reich, PhD is an avid farmdener (more than a gardener, less than a farmer) who turned from plant and soil research with the USDA and Cornell University to writing, lecturing, and consulting. His books include A NORTHEAST GARDENER'S YEAR,THE PRUNING BOOK, WEEDLESS GARDENING,UNCOMMON FRUITS FOR EVERY GARDEN, LANDSCAPING WITH FRUIT, and GROW FRUIT NATURALLY. He writes regularly for Associated Press and publications such as FINE GARDENING and HORTICULTURE. His garden has been featured in such publications as the NEW YORK TIMES and MARTHA STEWART LIVING, has won awards from NATIONAL GARDENING and ORGANIC GARDENING magazines, and has been included in "Open Days" tours of the Garden Conservancy.
SOUTH PHILLY PRUNING WORKSHOP
WHERE: South Philadelphia Older Adults Center

COST: $10 suggested donation, free for POP partners, BYO lunch

Kevin Stutler and POP Director Phil Forsyth will teach correct pruning for maximum health and production of fruit trees and berry bushes. Dress warmly as a large portion of the workshop will be hands-on pruning at the South Philadelphia Older Adult Center and other nearby orchard sites.
WEST PHILLY PRUNING WORKSHOP

Mason Vollmer will lead a workshop looking at both the theory and practice of winter fruit tree pruning, with hands-on demonstration in the orchard at the new Community Farm and Food Resource Center at Bartram's Garden.
Mr. Vollmer, a Horticultural Educator for over three decades and a certified arborist, is Agricultural Director at Camphill Soltane in Glenmoore, PA which has an orchard and horticultural program for adults with developmental disabilities.
