Want to grow delicious, healthy fruit without chemical sprays and other intensive management strategies?  The Philadelphia Orchard Project is bringing orchard all-star Lee Reich to town to lead this exciting workshop, which will cover simplified fruit growing from a number of angles: fruit and varietal selection, soil, site, natural pest management, and a special focus on winter pruning.  Morning classroom time will be followed by an afternoon of actual hands-on pruning of fruit trees, berry bushes, and fruiting vines at Awbury's agricultural village  with the author of THE PRUNING BOOK.
Lee Reich, PhD is an avid farmdener (more than a gardener, less than a farmer) who turned from plant and soil research with the USDA and Cornell University to writing, lecturing, and consulting.  His books include A NORTHEAST GARDENER'S YEAR,THE PRUNING BOOK, WEEDLESS GARDENING,UNCOMMON FRUITS FOR EVERY GARDEN, LANDSCAPING WITH FRUIT, and GROW FRUIT NATURALLY.  He writes regularly for Associated Press and publications such as FINE GARDENING and HORTICULTURE.  His garden has been featured in such publications as the NEW YORK TIMES and MARTHA STEWART LIVING, has won awards from NATIONAL GARDENING and ORGANIC GARDENING magazines, and has been included in "Open Days" tours of the Garden Conservancy.
Host site Awbury is a 55-acre historic arboretum in the heart of Germantown.  In 2012, POP will partner with Awbury and Weavers Way Farm to plant a new demonstration orchard at Awbury's Agricultural Village with grant support from the Harlon Fund of the Philadelphia Foundation.
