Searle’s Reith Lectures
Subject: Lectures 6 (Free Will)
Date: June 22
Time: 6 pm
Where: Black Sheep restaurant, Cambridge, MA
This will conclude our discussion of Searle's Reith Lectures.
We will meet at 6 pm at the Black Sheep restaurant in Cambridge. The Black Sheep is located in the Kendall Hotel, which is a few hundred feet from the Kendall T-stop.
The lectures are available in book form: “Minds, Brains and Science”, Harvard Univ. Press (1984). The copy I have is the 13th printing and was printed in 2003. The lectures are also available on the BBC web site. You can listen to the sound recording of the lectures or you can download a PDF version.
Each lecture is self-contained. You do not have to attend all three meetings to enjoy the benefit of the discussions.
In his introduction to his book, Searle says the main theme of the lectures is “the question of how we reconcile a certain traditional mentalistic conception that we have of ourselves with an apparently inconsistent conception of the universe as a purely physical system . . .” That is, how do we reconcile our de facto dualism? This is not new, but I think it remains a prevailing theme in the 21st century.
