Making Your Website Mobile-Friendly: What, How and Why

The next Philly Net Tuesday, January 8, will be about how, why and what it means to make your website more accessible for mobile devices like iPads and smart phones. As usual, doors will open at 6:00 PM at the Friends Center, 1501 Cherry Street (and we’ll be streaming the event live via (

Internet usage on mobile devices is expected to surpass usage from desktop machines in 2014. Making sure that your website is responsive to various devices is critical to staying relevant and accessible. Our panel will discuss WHY this trend is important to understand and act upon, as well as WHAT it means to be mobile friendly and responsive – with lots of examples. And, although we’ll touch on considerations of HOW your website needs to change, it will NOT be a deep technical discussion.

Who should attend:

  • Nonprofit professionals and social change activists who
want to understand more about the opportunities and challenges of having  mobile-friendly and responsive websites.
  • Techies who want to learn more about the context of this
topic and about the needs of nonprofit and activist websites.
  • Anyone who realizes that a profound shift toward mobile Internet  access is underway, and will continue to have implications and opportunities that we are only beginning to anticipate

Our panel consists of three Internet professionals who will talk about this topic from complementary perspectives:

Reed Gustow is an active member of the Philly WordPress Meetup Group, a board member of PANMA (the Philadelphia Area New Media Association), and a board member of the  Philadelphia Area Computer Society. His company, Delta Angel, makes WordPress websites and offers WordPress instruction.

Michael Tedeschi is an interactive user-interface, user-experience designer bringing a background in web and touch-screen platforms to cultural, corporate, and other digital projects. Currently, Michael is the Principal of Interactive Mechanics, a start-up interactive design consultancy specializing in exciting and engaging experiences through web, mobile and installation platforms.

Robby Perdue is a member of the O3 World’s Client Services Department and ensures that each of the agency's projects suits clients' strategic needs, organizational alignment, cause, and culture. O3 World's mobile work includes solutions for the Travis Manion Foundation, Back on My Feet, Five Below, and Comcast.

This will be a fun, interactive and practical discussion about a topic that we all need to learn more about. RSVP’s are appreciated for planning purposes (though not required). Lite fare will be available.

Thanks to the American Friends Service Committee for sponsorship.

The three speakers complemented each other very well, helped by great questions from the audience. Overall a good description of the new emphasis on users and content. There's a nice article about responsive design from the agency perspective at

As a developer with a need to do some mobile site development, I find value spending some time looking at the process through a decision makers lens. This discussion provided me just that opportunity with speakers that left me with plenty of food for thought.
