  • This location is shown only to members

This hike is rated INTERMEDIATE.

We'll meet near the restrooms at the Gateway entrance to Scottsdale's McDowell Sonoran Preserve.  The hiking paced will be at a mild rate, not an extreme fast fitness pace. The hikes may vary each week, but will be 5 miles or less in length and completed in less than 2 hours.  These hikes will start on time and the expectation is that it will end at or before the stated end time for those who do need to get to work. All the trails and intersections in McDowell Sonoran Preserve are well-marked.  Bring lots of water, durable hiking footwear, snacks, and a camera.

Trail Length: Gateway Loop 4.42 miles

Time: 2 hours

Elevation Gain: 800 feet

Difficulty: Moderate
Facilities: Restrooms, water
Trail Style: lollipop style

It's not unusual for members of our group to go for coffee and/or food afterwards to Tom’s Thumb Fresh Market/Car-wash/Gas Station. Check out their menu

Ahe! Rene and Norm; one from Trail Mix, one from Grayhawk, and two from Phoenix (2-Hour) Beginner Hikers! This was a perfect small group and a great mixture. We are slowing down from the heat, but that’s to be expected. This was a fun hike, tough though, and then the wind started blowing when we were finished. Lunch was dee-lish-us!

Thanks Rene! What would Fridays be like without your hike?

Last time I attended was my first time and a couple of us held Renee back because we were slower. Should I try it again since I go up hill slower then the groups pace?

Hi Norma ~ thank you for joining our group and for hiking with us last weekend.

If you haven't already, I would suggest that you read the "What to expect on a hike" page and "About us..." on the home page of Phoenix (2-Hour) Beginner Hikers.

We welcome people of various fitness levels and hiking experience. I think the goal should be to at least have the hike leader in view for most of the hike and not fall more than a couple minutes behind. Gateway Loop is an INTERMEDIATE hike and Rene graciously allows a self-pace, but we also need to ensure that the group begins and ends the hike together without a lot of separation.

You might consider doing this hike with some friends that go at the same pace you do a few times, and work up to the two-hour time frame. I know that this will not be easy as the temperatures continue to rise. Good luck!

Ok. Then I graciously bow out.

    can I bring my dog?

    March 26, 2013

    • Jim K.

Yes, but dogs must be leashed. You’ll come across other dogs frequently. Please keep in mind that this entire hike is approx. 5 miles long. The first half is all up-up-up to the saddle and then the second half is all down. This is a beautiful hike! See you tomorrow, Patricia.
