Lookout Mountain Circumference Trail

This hike is rated EASY. Starting at 8 a.m. again.

Come on out for a Saturday morning hike at Lookout Mountain! This trek will take us around the #308 trail in a nice big loop. There are definitely some uphill climbs, so while it's rated easy, first-timers will have to work it a bit.  Bring lots of water, snacks, sunscreen, and a camera and sturdy hiking boots are recommended.

DISTANCE: 3.4 miles roundtrip
ELEVATION GAIN: 225 ft more than once
TRAIL STYLE: Loop
DURATION: 1.5 hours
DOGS: Yes, if leashed.
FACILITIES: Bathroom and water fountain
WEBSITE: Trailmap
DIRECTIONS: From the intersection of Cave Creek Rd and Sharon Dr, go West on Sharon to 18th St, head North on 18th St until it ends. The park entrance is on your right hand side. Google maps may lead you astray especially if you approach from the north, so follow these directions as you get close!

This sure was a nice big group that moved together well. Glad to see some brand-new faces and some newer returning members as well. Gee, that wind sure helped, didn’t it? Today in the back we marveled at how scenic Lookout Mountain is, and we were viewing it in a fresh way. "Sweat is the best cardiovascular agent known to man."

    Thanks Jean!

This will be my first hike. Will sneakers be ok? Definitely will need an experienced buddy to hike with?

Hello Monica! I would have to agree with the hike description above -- "sturdy hiking boots are recommended". This trail is VERY rocky at times and there are lots of loose stones as well. Lookout Mountain was my 2nd hike with this group and I got my hiking boots right in the nick of time!

I strongly recommend reading the "What to expect on a hike" page if this will be your first hike. You do not need an experienced hiking buddy since this is a very fun & friendly group; however, you do need to be able to keep up with the group leader. We move at a rather moderate pace.

Hi Monica, Jim is right, hiking boots are best, that's for sure. However, some people hike in tennis shoes, not many, but some, so of course you can hike in them if you are not quite ready for the expense of buying hiking boots. If your tennis shoes are good ones and have great tread on the bottom then those may work for the time being. But if they are older and somewhat slick on the bottom, then no, those will not work. Please use your own judgement.
