Remember getting your first bike?

Please join the Phoenix Philanthropists for this very fun Recycle Your Bicycle event, repairing and polishing bicycles, and make that first-bike dream come true for many underprivileged children this holiday season. Last year, together with other groups, the Phoenix Philanthropists helped refurbish over 700 bikes for foster care children.

Both Channel 12 and The Arizona Republic will be asking the public to donate bikes at Earnhardt Dealerships, so much help is needed for what is expected to be another great community response.  So please come help us make a difference for foster care children--and stir up those old wonderful memories of your first bike.

TIME FLEXIBILITY

The event takes places most Saturdays until mid-December, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m (be sure and check the calendar). Volunteers are welcome to work the full shift, or a minimum two-hour shift anytime during the four-hour event. Please RSVP, and simply note in comments what hours you will work, if not the full four-hour shift.

DUTIES

There are several duties from which volunteers can choose, including light and heavy mechanical work under the guidance of the former U.S. Bike Team Technician; power washing; and detailing. In detailing, which requires the most volunteers, volunteers will Armor All tires, polish frames and clean wheel rims. All bike parts and cleaning supplies are provided. Mechanics are always needed, but absolutely no experience is necessary.

WHAT TO BRING

Sunscreen, hats, and, as temperatures cool, jackets, as most work takes places outside, either in the sun or under covered parking awnings. Some members also bring stools or collapsible chairs (you know, like at soccer games). May want to bring a ground cover since many volunteers will work outside in the parking lot.

ATTIRE GUIDELINES

Wear comfortable clothing that you would wear for yard work.

AGE GUIDELINES

The minimum age to volunteer is 10 years old, with a parent or legal guardian. Many Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and kids from schools will be there to help.

FREE FOOD & DRINKS

Volunteers can enjoy complimentary beverages and lunch.

PHOENIX PHILANTHROPISTS RELEASE FORM

If you have not already, please complete the online Phoenix Philanthropists Release Form.  A form should also be completed by any adults guests of members; and for each participating child under 18, by their parent or legal guardian.

I saw an article in Popular Science about freezing them with canned air first, then shattering them off (the intense cold makes the metal of the lock brittle). Can bring some, if you still have a few of those.

Not sure about bikes without keys. But the mechanics should know how to remove the locks. A few of them have seen every bike issue there is.

I should be there the entire 4 hours, unless you need help only at a certain time.

Appreciate it Jason. 4 hours works great. BTW, we are there this Saturday (10/26) also. We are expecting several hundred bikes to be delivered from Earnhardt Auto Centers.

Is there a contact telephone number for a group of boys that would like to attend on November 2nd?
