Very interesting, made me go outside my comfort zone a little, which is a good thing. I will have to try it again when I have enough filters!

Excellent albeit expensive workshop. Now I need more filters, a better tripod and a road trip to somewhere with big surf - hmm, can we do an Oregon coast photowalk?

Meeting spot: Meet at the old wharf, 50 metres from the free parking lot at Blackie Spit.

How to get there: From King George Highway, turn west onto Crescent Road as it winds past stately seaside homes and heads down the hill toward Crescent Beach. Once across a set of railroad tracks, turn right onto Sullivan Street, then right onto McBride Avenue and out to the free parking lot at Blackie Spit Park.

Getting ready to leave now. See you there soon!

    Hello everyone!

Been checking the weather as well. I actually strongly prefer cloudy days and don't mind a bit of rain either....means that there will be less people around and the light quality will be nice and soft. I personally use a large umbrella and can be very comfortable shooting unless it is pouring down. So from what I can tell now I'd say it's a go but I'll wait until Trish makes an official call tonight...

    • Nicholas B.

Yay!! So looking forward to this! See you all tomorrow! :-)

      April 4, 2013

    • Trish

Hi everyone, we'll wait until after 8pm tonight to officially decide, in case we can see a clear break. I'll be in touch then. Thanks.

I am not familiar with a "ND Set"!
    What would this "set" include, I have a 9 stop, ND8 & ND4?

    March 28, 2013

    • Marc K.

      Hi Rob, a set simply means 2 filters....in my case I typically use a 10 stop and a 6 stop. Both B+W.

      March 29, 2013

    • Rob

I have a Hoya 9 stop and a ND8 filter, but am having a difficult time finding a 7 stop 72mm filter, any suggestions?

  • Trish

Fingers and toes crossed for gorgeous weather next Saturday morning :)

    March 31, 2013

  • Leone

Sounds VERY interesting. I will first figure out what ND filters are, what they cost to buy, and if I can obtain a remote shutter release for my Canon 40D in time. Thanks a lot!

Hi Leone, in case you missed Marc's post elsewhere on this page, check out his blog for info on filters: http://www.bulbexposu...

Hey Marc- I know you said first come first serve to borrow your ND filters... do Ihave to claim in person on Saturday or can I ask to borrow them now lol

    March 28, 2013

    • Nicholas B.

I have a 6, 7, 9, and 10 stop ND filters. Depending upon lighting conditions it is unlikely that I will be using all of them at the same time. I may be able to loan somebody a filter or two. Also, If anybody needs to borrow a tripod I will bring an additional Manfrotto tripod along too.

      1 · March 29, 2013

    • Rob

If needed I have a Manfrotto 190cxpro3 with a ball head that is my back-up that someone could use? I would be more than happy to bring it as well!

If you want to learn more about filters before this meetup, please visit my blog where I have a page dedicated to ND filters. This will also talk about which filters to buy. I use a total of 16 stops (most of the time) which is a 10 and a 6 stop B+W ND filter stacked. You can also buy a Hoya 400x 9 stop ND filter and stack it with a Tiffen 7 stop ND+IR filter. This last combination is great for color long exposures. Link to my blog with more information is here: http://www.bulbexposures.com/free-long-exposure-tutorial/

    Hello everyone!

Just a quick comment with regards to gear: In addition to your camera, tripod and remote shutter release (wired or wireless) you will also need ND filters. If you do NOT have your own, I will bring a few sets with me for you to borrow and use. I usually charge for ND filter rentals, but won't be for this shoot/meetup. I will make it first-come-first-serve though, and I have about 10 sets of filters...

Looking forward to shooting some log exposures with you all !!

And peoples, Craigslist is your friend. I just scored a barely used 10 stop B+W for half the price.

    Filter borrow procedure:

I have posted this below, but want to make sure it does not get missed.

I've been thinking about how to lens out my filters fairly....you will definitely have to claim them in person at the location. Posting on this board, as Trish mentioned below, does not guarantee that I will have a set reserved for you.

I should have a minimum of 12 sets of filters, so more than half the participants will be covered. If we have more than 12 people wanting to use my filters, I may draw names from a hat in order to be fair to all. Don't want you to break speed limits in order to be the first on location :-) And remember you can always share a set of filters with another person as we have enough time to shoot out there...

    March 28, 2013

  • Theresa

what lens would you recommend for this?

    March 26, 2013

    • Marc K.

Hello Theresa! I tend to shoot with wide-angle lenses as far 'down' as 18mm on full frame. But anything 50mm and wider will work.

Hey, Neil, how did you post your comment before mine? did you beat me to it?

      March 25, 2013

Was in too much of a rush to read the fine print - but I got it now! Thanks Neil & Trish.

Oh, and one more thing. I will include my feedback and review of your images shot on the day. Simply upload them after the meetup, and I will leave my comments for you. I belief a review is a very important part of the photography experience, and meetup makes it easy to do so after the event, once everyone had a chance to work on their images from the day. Before we start shooting, I will be talking about composition ideas and guidelines, and I will also be entertaining any technical questions you might have. Thank you,
    Marc
