March meetup at King Foo

Details

Due to popular demand, we're shifting gears and we now organize meetups on a monthly basis.

For the March meetup we're teaming up with our friends at King Foo (http://www.king-foo.be). King Foo is the kind of company that is built around community principles and it's already to 2nd time they're hosting one of our meetups. But this time it will be in their office.

King Foo happily accepted our offer to have one of their speakers on the schedule. They even have 2 colleagues who will be doing a duo presentation.

Phoenix Servers by Nils De Moor (WooRank)

Traditionally, we are used to introduce servers to deploy our code as if they were our family pet. We name them, worry about them, wake them up at 4am if storm is coming. Virtualization technology has enabled us to change that mindset and regard them as a carton of milk: we throw them away if we want a new, fresher one. In this talk we'll review tools, like Docker and Packer, to provision servers, deploy code and test your server's final state in a recursive manner.

About Nils

Nils (https://twitter.com/ndemoor) is the CTO and co-founder of WooRank (http://www.woorank.com). In his mission to enforce No-Ops and to automate everything, he loves exploring cutting and bleeding edge technologies, like Docker, CoreOS, Packer, Ansible, etc. He uses these tools to let his team focus on what they do best: developing powerful apps and services.

The Database Access rEvolution by Tom Van Herreweghe & Jachim Coudenys (King Foo)

In PHP, we have different tools at our disposition to talk to a database. There are also different ways of working with the data coming from that database. Many people take working with a database abstraction layer or ORM for granted. But how do these modern tools work? Why are we doing things the way we are doing them now? By taking back a step and looking at each itteration in the evolution of working with databases in PHP applications, we will try to explain the principles on which our current tools are built.

About Tom

Tom Van Herreweghe (https://twitter.com/miljar) is an all-round web developer with little over 10 years of experience between his first HTML page and his current position at King Foo (http://www.king-foo.be/). He has a very strong passion (and preference) for anything PHP and Javascript related. Coming from an age without frameworks, he knows how to handle raw code, and even finds pleasure in doing so. Tom is driven by a desire to constantly evolve and bring his skills to the next level. This brings him to conferences all around the world, and PHPBenelux meetings all around the country. When he's disconnected from the Web, he enjoys spending time with his family, practicing his Jiu-Jitsu skills, and playing couch potato.

About Jachim

Jachim Coudenys (https://twitter.com/coudenysj) is a PHP developer at King Foo (http://www.king-foo.be/). He loves automating things and finding solutions for all kinds of web technology problems.
