PHP London February 2013

  • Feb 7, 2013 · 7:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

PHP London is a non-profit group to promote knowledge sharing and best practice amongst PHP developers and web development and business professionals in London. The main product right now is a regular PHP meetup, basically a monthly PHP PubCon. In order to attend all you need is an interest in PHP.

This month's meetup is generously sponsored by Couchbase who will be providing drinks at the start of the meeting.

Couchbase is a leading provider of NoSQL database technology and the company behind the Couchbase open source project. Couchbase Server, the company’s flagship product, is a NoSQL document-oriented database with production deployments at AOL, Cisco, Concur, LinkedIn, Orbitz,, Shuffle Master, Zynga and hundreds of other household names worldwide. It is particularly well suited for interactive applications, providing easy scalability, consistent high performance, 24x365 availability, and a flexible data model for ease of development.

  • 7:00-8:00 - informal drinks and chat

  • 8:00-8:05 - welcome by executive committee & any group announcements

  • 8:05-9:00 - talk(s):

    • Title:Developing Applications with Couchbase and PHP
    • By:Robin Johnson
    • About: Couchbase Server 2.0, based on the Apache open source license, has rich querying capabilities of the distributed database through views built atop an always updating incremental map-reduce. We will see how to access the simple and yet powerful constructs using a variety of code samples. These samples will demonstrate how to use the client Smart SDK for PHP and we will also look at integration with various popular PHP Frameworks. This session will provide an overview of Couchbase NoSQL, the ecosystem and what it means to developers, architects and implementers. We will demonstrate with examples of how to use the PHP language API with liberal but simple code examples on Couchbase to drive home some of these concepts.

If you are interested in giving a talk, or want to request one, please look at our talks page:

    Can I start a conversation about peoples experience with high-traffic PHP websites. What end-to-end architecture/methodology are people using?

    Whoever has any questions related to PHP, MVC's, server architecture, mobile application development, you can contact me at [masked]. I will gladly help where i can!

    The talk was mostly good. The high level description of Couchbase was very informative (coming from virtually no, NoSQL knowledge) However, I think attempting code demos seems a bit of a waste of time. The programmers in the room (well, at least myself) would be fine with just examples in slides, and I imagine the non programmers wouldn't be keen in any case. I was a tiny bit disappointed that the guy giving PHP examples didn't know that much PHP!

    It was good o chat with other developers as well: I'm in a small company, and I realise my contact with other experienced developers is limited. Looking forward to the next one :-)

    Last week AppShed released a PHP API for developers to build cross platform mobile apps using PHP. We now have a code generator within AppShed so it will generate all the GUI code for you, all you have to do is write the business logic. AppShed is free for building web apps. A developer account allows you to download the source code and submit to any App Store using PhoneGap Build. This is free for the next month while we are in Beta.

    I'll do a quick demo at the MeetUp if there's interest?
