PHP London is a non-profit group to promote knowledge sharing and best practice amongst PHP developers and web development and business professionals in London. The main product right now is a regular PHP meetup, basically a monthly PHP PubCon. In order to attend all you need is an interest in PHP.

Drinks at the start of the meeting are generously provided by 10gen.

10gen is the company behind MongoDB, the leading NoSQL database, and on April 9th 10gen bring the largest MongoDB event in Europe to London. At MongoDB London you can expect to hear from contributing 10gen engineers on exciting new features in MongoDB 2.4, success stories and case studies from local customers and community members -- and most of all networking opportunities with London's top tech talent.

As a valued member of the community we can offer you a 10% discount on general admission tickets. Book here with the code PHP10 to get your ticket.

Agenda:

  • 7:00-8:00 - informal drinks and chat

  • 8:00-8:05 - welcome by executive committee & any group announcements

  • 8:05-9:00 - talk(s):

    • Title: Mocking Demystified
    • By:Marcello Duarte
    • About: Replacing dependents with doubles is a central part of testing that every developer has to master. This talk goes over the different types of doubles and explains their place in testing, how to implement them in a mainstream mocking framework, and which strategies or doubles to use in different message exchange scenarios between objects. After this talk you will have moved a step forward in your understanding of testing in the context of object oriented programming.

Marcello Duarte is the lead developer of PHPSpec and heads the Training at Inviqa, a leading PHP consultancy business in Europe. As an agile coach, he's coached many teams in many organisations into Agile processes and development practices like Scrum, TDD, Refactoring, Collaborative Product Ownership and Software Quality.

If you are interested in giving a talk, or want to request one, please contact us.

  • 9:00 onwards - more drinks and chat at The Fox pub

Unfortunately, it was pretty poor from my perspective. I was rudely received at the door and brusquely shunted downstairs where there was no one to greet me and explain to me what the plan of the event was or to at least introduce themselves and ask if I needed any help or had any questions. The event was marked with a 7pm start yet by 7.30pm still nothing had happened. I waited a little longer and then left. Following the comments and photos that were posted, it looks like I did not miss much in the end. I hope these comments will be taken on board as constructive criticism as I have been to other events organised by this group which were very good.

      Hi Johanna,
Thanks for the feedback and I apologise for my error on the timings. I misread that bit.

During first hour it good time to talk about coding or IT. I bring my laptop and I try chat about coding. It is not easy to chat with "strangers" about programming. But from my point of view i make some progress :)

Enjoyed it - Excellent talk, free beer and the chance to meet up with old friends. Well organised - ran to time.

@Marcello - Only criticism was it was difficult to read your code slides. Perhaps more of a contrast between code and background.

      Hi Nicolas,
I do run my own groups as well as several other events of varying scales from small intimate gatherings to large exhibitions in venues such as ExCel. Thank you for your suggestion.
      Best wishes,
      Robert

I kinda of miss when it used to be at the pub. It was simple, everyone could see the screen and it felt more social.

      2 · April 4, 2013

    • Johanna C.

We left the pub cause it was over crowded, not because we wanted to. It may not seem like it, but there was 120 people in campus tonight. We can't fit that many people in the back room of a pub :) we'd really like it if anyone had recommendations for pubs or other locations of the same size, free or cheap.

    Hi Guys,

I am looking forward to the event but wanted to write in advance to see if anyone are possibly ably help me out, I am a commerical guy not a programmer....

I had a piece of software built in India by a team of developers for an interactive QR code reader application and it actually works pretty well
However the app is related to the release of a product and I would love to have a PHP expert to look at it and take a view on the architecture and security of the product to see what their thoughts are on reliability and security ??

If anyone thinks they could help let me know
    Thanks

Is this usual "Downstairs, level -1, in the cafe. Capacity is limited to the first 120 people to arrive, regardless of RSVP"? Any reason to RSVP then? Traveling from outside London...this could be awkward.

    March 29, 2013

    • Johanna C.

We rarely have capacity issues, but we have to let people know its a possibility. I would recommend arriving closer to 7pm rather than closer to 8pm and then you'll have nothing to worry about :) see you there!

Yes, sorry about that. We're having some problems with the wiki and we're unlikely to revive it. Please contact us through the meetup page, email, or twitter if you'd like to give a talk.
