    • Title: PHP in 2013
    • By: Rasmus Lerdorf
    • About: A look at PHP 5.4 and 5.5 features. Significant performance improvements, Traits, short array syntax, function array dereferencing, generators, finally statement, opcache and lots of other new and cool things are available in PHP 5.4 and in the upcoming PHP 5.5 release, but are you ready to upgrade? What might trip up your legacy code and your deploy mechanism and which assumptions do you need to revisit.

Rasmus Lerdorf is known for having gotten the PHP project off the ground in 1995 and has contributed to a number of other open source projects over the years. He was an infrastructure architect at Yahoo! for more than 7 years and joined Etsy in 2012. He was born in Greenland, grew up in Denmark and Canada and has a Systems Design engineering degree from the University of Waterloo. You can follow @rasmus on Twitter.

Does anyone know how to download it?

Just a suggestion, if the talk starts around 7 of 7:15 we would have the topic that was just presented to discuss which would be much more productive rather then the present open ended discussion that happen before talks

Thanks to the organisers and of course Rasmus for taking the time - you can't get a better speaker for a local meetup than that!

However, from the back you couldn't hear much of what was being said. I also found some of the attendees really rude with their constant 'jokes' and interruptions. Everyone knows needle/haystack order is confusing, you don't need to derail 120 people for 5 minutes to bitch at Rasmus about it. Also, if you're going to interrupt the speaker to tell them they are wrong, be *really* sure you understand their point first.

Hey guys, if there's any problems at the venue (ie the music) please just come tell us! We don't bite :) We're just a bunch of volunteers and devs just like you guys :)

      > We are IT people who would rather not talk. Thanks for the sweeping statement Shehzad.

      July 5, 2013

    • Shehzad A.

It was supposed to be tongue in cheek. But majority of IT people are like that hence there wasn't any networking going on and people sticking with their friends

Also got turned away - shame; should have opted for live stream straightaway, I guess ...

Thanks all for your feedback! Keep it coming. The entry policy tonight is the same this as it always has been since we started the organisation (nearly 10 years ago!). For some reason its causing concern for several people this month, so we're happy to take everyone's feedback on board and make changes where needed. It looks like people would prefer to restrict the number of RSVPs to the capacity of the venue and operate a waiting list. I'll discuss more details with everyone at the meeting tonight and send an update of what's been decided.

    July 4, 2013

    • Iain A.

I don't think it's necessary to change anything just yet. It's not likely to be a problem again for quite a while.

      July 5, 2013

    • Danny H.

We came all the way up from Brighton for the event, got to the doors at 7:15 and turned away. Waste of time and money.

      July 5, 2013

  • Mathew D.

That meetup was a bit meh. We should give the organisers the benefit of the doubt though as they're normally better.

Some pointers: Everyone sat down at 7, I really wanted to do some networking and it was made impossible. I talked to a few people at the back and left. I suggest a "No sitting down, you've been doing it 8 hours today already policy".

The music was a nice touch, it reminded me of XOYO or The Village Underground, but I could not hear the person next to me. and since I couldn't do it there :P Looking for work, I'll setup your servers (ansible, puppet), write your frontend (coffeescript, sass) and your backend (PHP). I have a strong interest in new technologies and techniques as well (Clojure, functional programming, Ruby, etc ...) So get in touch.

    Kind Regards,
    -Mathew Davies.

At the end of the event everyone just went home, nobody wanted networking. What an antisocial group ;-)

Is there anyway to introduce video streaming, perhaps reducing onsite demand, and decreasing risk for folks a distance away?

    2 · July 4, 2013

  • Matthew M.

Hmm, 300 signed up to attend, only 120 allowed through the doors? Not that I want to make the elephant in the room feel self-conscious, but is this going to work?

Sorry - will be missing this again! A last minute overlap with Shopcade's summer party. Enjoy!

    July 4, 2013

  • Andrew H.

This entry policy isn't fair. Most/all other meetups are on first-to-register basis. People who register late and show up early shouldn't get priority. It's also bouind to lead to "crowd control" problems at the venue...
