PHP London August 2013

  • Aug 1, 2013 · 7:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

PHP London is a non-profit group to promote knowledge sharing and best practice amongst PHP developers and web development and business professionals in London. The main product right now is a regular PHP meetup, basically a monthly PHP PubCon. In order to attend all you need is an interest in PHP.

Drinks at the beginning of the meeting are generously sponsored by Inviqa.

Inviqa is passionate about delivering high quality enterprise level web projects. Specialising in PHP, our experienced developers love what they do. To be a part of our inspiring team, contact [masked].

Agenda:

  • 7:00-8:00 - informal drinks and chat

  • 8:00-8:05 - welcome by executive committee & any group announcements

  • 8:05-9:00 - talk(s):

    • Title: Redis Everywhere
    • By: Ricard Clau
    • About: Redis is an extremely fast data structure server that can be easily added to your existing stack and act like a Swiss army knife to help solve many problems that would be extremely difficult to workaround with the traditional RDBMS. This talk will cover an introduction to Redis, how we can use it in our PHP applications and some advanced use cases beyond the most known ones, which are probably Caching and Session Management. There will also be some war stories from my time at SocialPoint, a video gaming company based in Barcelona where Redis is used extensively for projects like DragonCity that has to deal with more than 7 million daily users.

Ricard Clau came to London 3 months ago from sunny Barcelona and works as a Software Engineer at Hailo. He is a Symfony2 lover and a strong PHP believer, with wide experience in big e-commerce websites and video gaming applications. He tries to contribute to Open Source projects, specially in the Symfony2 ecosystem. He is also curious about technologies like Erlang, Go and NoSQL databases.

If you are interested in giving a talk, or want to request one, please contact us: [masked]

  • 9:00 onwards - more drinks and chat at the Fox pub

Nice blog too - sorry I missed your talk, if I knew it was going to be you I would have come down :(

Never mind Maria, hope to see you in the next PHP meetup!

I have a ticket for the August TDD Immersion day but now they have announced a September edition it suits me better. Is anyone up for a swap?

    August 1, 2013

    • Cristiano S.

Hi Alex, I've just bought the september ticket and sent the order Number and swap request with your august ticket to email address [masked]
So we wait for a confirmation message for the swap from them.

    • Cristiano S.

Hi Alex, the swap has been done. I've received the confirmation of swap with the new ticket for August.
      Thank You!

Great meetup yesterday, thanks to the organisers for putting it on! If there are any freelance developers who I didn't speak to who might be interested in working for a new social network (think LinkedIn for politicians), get in touch!

  • Tomasz T.

Still waiting in the queue... Anyone else not going? Maybe I can make it :P

20p returnable on entry or kept for php London conference funds.

      August 2, 2013

Nice in theory, but hard to do in practice. It would be hard to pay the money and give the organisers the extra problem of handling cash.

Very nice networking time and inspirational ideas!

Are you planning on publishing the slides from last night?

Good bunch of people (as always) and an interesting talk. Plenty of room (and beer) for all. Good work, Ciaran and Joanna!

A pity I will miss meeting fellow Barcelona dev Ricard :/

Hope to see you all next month :)

Made other plans since being added to wait list...

    Sorry, can no longer attend.

Unfortunately a scheduled site release has been brought forward and now clashes with this.

Since this is consistently over-subscribed, has any thought been given to maybe finding a bigger venue? Or is it intentionally being limited?

    1 · July 30, 2013

    • Iain A.

Just go to the meeting. Rasmus won't be there this week!

      July 31, 2013

    • Johanna C.

I'd recommend coming anyway as well. It's going to take a few months to get people used to only RSVPing if they're actually coming, so I think there will still be a lot of no shows on the list this month.

      1 · July 31, 2013

  • Geoff W.

Any of the other 85 people on the waiting list interested in meeting outside the entrance to Google Campus and finding a pub somewhere? Like this post if you're up for that.

    1 · July 30, 2013

    • Derick R.

It's likely we'll go to the Fox around the corner afterwards, I'll be there. But just come to Google Campus, as it's just the "120 people that show up first" as far as I kno

      July 30, 2013

    • Geoff W.

Cheers for the heads-up, I'll be in the Fox anyway regardless. @Organisers: could you confirm that the first 120 to arrive get places?

      July 30, 2013

  • Chris B.

Has the entrance policy changed following last month? Should I not bother attending since I'm 87th person on the waiting list?

+1 It would be good to get clarification on the entrance policy.

      1 · July 30, 2013

  • Matthew M.

Please do un-attend if you decide not to come - it would be lovely for those of us who are just outside the 120-person-limit to have a chance of coming!

    July 25, 2013

    • Matthew M.

Yeah, I wouldn't normally worry, but last month didn't have room for everybody. Given that my workday only ends at 6.30 it's quite relevant to me to know if I have to leave early, to avoid risk of disappointment...

      July 26, 2013

    • Ricard C.

Matthew, last month it was Rasmus, the man. I guess I am not that popular ;)

      1 · July 27, 2013

  • Ricard C.

Marti, you can just come and chat with me next Thursday then :)

    July 25, 2013

  • Marti

I'm from Barcelona too, and I came a month ago, I would like to ask Ricard about his experience.
