  • This location is shown only to members

PHP London is a non-profit group to promote knowledge sharing and best practice amongst PHP developers and web development and business professionals in London. The main product right now is a regular PHP meetup, basically a monthly PHP PubCon. In order to attend all you need is an interest in PHP.

Agenda:

  • 7:00-8:00 - informal drinks and chat

  • 8:00-8:05 - welcome by executive committee & any group announcements

  • 8:05-9:00 - talk(s):

    • Title: Scaling with PHP
    • By: Michel Bartz
    • About: Learnings from scaling PHP to 18 million users per day serving over 100 million pages. From technology choices (Sphinx, Redis, Memcached, Apache vs nginx), to structuring your application for scaling and how to extract the most out of PHP.

Michel has a Bsc in Software Engineering as well as a Bsc in Communication and Internet Marketing, and over six years of experience in very challenging industries such as e-commerce, mobile applications, digital signage, video streaming and many more, as a developer, web architect and manager, scaling websites cumulating over 5 billion page views per month. You can find him on Twitter @MichelBartz or Github.

If you are interested in giving a talk, or want to request one, please contact us: [masked]

  • 9:00 onwards - more drinks and chat at the Fox pub.

I think it's time we acknowledged this event is over subscribed. For the first time I was turned away at the door with another four guys I brought from my company. I'm not surprised this happened to others when Rasmus presented but with all due respect to tonight's presenter, I didn't expect it to happen tonight.

I agree, the system should be changed. What's the point of RSPV and then being turned away?

      1 · September 6, 2013

    • Paul C.

What you need a bigger venue - the venue for last night could hold 75 IIRC - and that size was passed with ease.

Can we honestly not waste an hour of informal chat because people tend to stick with their own friends so I would rather go home an hour earlier if presentation started an hour early

The current starting time is nice. Gives people who live outside London some time to get there and greet friends before the presentation.

Well, that would be one of the outcomes, yes. Though I don't think the time is currently set *because* of that. Rather, a good part of the monthly meeting is about socialising with other developers. It's nice to have some time for that. First to catch up, later to reflect on the talk. I think it works.

Even I was turned away from the door with other three developers, I had an RSVP email as well confirming my attendance ....

Can we get tonight's powerpoint from Michel put up for download?

    2 · September 5, 2013

    • Steve H.

I think he said it will go on to his github account.

Over subscribed... that is a shame.

Is the video going to be online? Having said that the video for the last month wasn't good quality nor could I hear the gentleman

No more RSVP spots left, but is it enforced? Can we just turn up? I doubt everyone who has RSVPd will be showing.

    September 5, 2013

    • Shehzad A.

On the other hand people who have not might ad rsvp policy is not enforced

The group is non-profit and this event is free, right? If it's not, how much does it cost?

    Hi

Do I have to RSVP to be able to attend? I intend coming along to my first meeting on 5th September.

No you don't. First come first served basis

Having fun and games getting php working on my (windows 7) laptop - any chance someone can give it a quick once over as a favour.

Are you no longer doing RSPV's at all then?

    2 · August 7, 2013

    • Matthew M.

I almost feel like a no RSVP policy would be sensible, given how tenuous the relationship between RSVPs and reality seems to be. Loads of people RSVP and don't show, plus (at least in theory) you can RSVP and not get in... I guess they do at least show that there's a lot of positive interest in the group :)

    Any news on the speaker?

    1 · August 20, 2013

  • John K.

Is the form bugged? Can't seem to sign up...

    August 8, 2013

    • Michael C

No. Rspv seems to be disabled

      August 8, 2013

    • Johanna C.

RSVPs are closed until we announce the speaker. You'll get an email when this happens.
