July 27th - Inaugural Games - Wrap Report

What a blast! Our first ever Meet-up came together quite smoothly. Ryan and I arrived in the parking lot at the same time, managed to identify each other as Funsters and made introductions right away. We headed toward the park together and, keeners that we are, discovered that we were the first to arrive.

I think we were both a little skeptical as the clock tipped past six and no one else was in sight. Thankfully, we?re both optimists and our banter was full of cheer rather than steeped in worry. Much to our delight, the rest of the group (Michi, Frank, Anna and Francis) started to trickle in over the next fifteen minutes.

Noel (trooper that he is) arrived from Surrey via transit; for that effort alone he deserves a big round of applause. Ryan drove in from Langley in his fancy-shmancy new (to him) fuel-efficient car. I recommend car-pooling with this truly fun Funster anytime he offers - I'd describe him as bubbly if he wasn't a boy ;)

The rest of us traveled in from around Vancouver; by foot, transit and car. And really, we all deserve kudos for taking a chance with our time and participating in the very first Tag! You?re it! Meet-up. All but one who RSVP?d ?yes? showed up (thank you!). Some brought friends, and everyone arrived in great spirits.

The park was beautiful, as was the weather. Young families were scattered about the grass and the playground, and a continuous string of people meandered by on the waterfront pathway. Almost all glanced our way; pointing and smiling. Our crazy fun antics seemed to be enjoyed by all.

We ended up playing on a small knoll that definitely made running around more challenging. The downhill momentum was nice, but the chase back up slowed us all down. Despite it being harder, we all agreed that the hill made it ?funner?. And the surrounding trees served us well as boundary markers.

The games lasted for about two hours ? surprising us all. The time flew by. We played a mix of freeze tag, cloths-pin tag, sting tag, dragon tag and our very own made up 'football tag'. Despite a few injuries (a heavily stepped on toe, scratches and twisted body parts) we all came out of it with smiles.

The whole group was played out by 8:30pm. The running around really worked up a good appetite. All of us decided to head to the Naam to fill our bellies with healthy nummy food - after sustaining ourselves on Oreos and salt-and-vinegar chips for the games, ha! Topping up the calories felt well earned.

Overall, I think everyone had a fun time (except maybe Anna who sat out early with a squashed toe!). More people would have been great ? but our small group did click nicely, and it gave us a chance to brainstorm on how to improve the games for the next round (being 'it' for too long is totally exhausting!)

Oh! I almost forgot. As decided by our ad hock trio of judges, Noel ?The Claw? Blain was, by unanimous decision, the official winner of the Inaugural Games. He went home with the coveted ?Defending Champion? trophy ? and will be back to defend his title on August 11th! All challenges for the title are welcome...

A big hurrah to all those who came out. And an enthusiastic invitation to all those who would like to join us at Queen Elizabeth Park for the next round.

Smiles, A.
