  • Colab, Level 11 WG Building

#KIWIJAM14  |  A 48 Hour Game Maker Event

What is #KIWIJAM14?

An annual, winter, shared, maker-space for NZ game-developers of any kind to meet, collaborate and compete in various global and local competitions.

It's part game-jam and part maker space.  But ultimately it's what you make it.

Come along, hang out, meet new devs, pick up a few tricks, compete in the competitions, work on your own project, get feedback, work on the Ludum Dare (which is over the same weekend - starting on Saturday).

Who Can Join?

Anyone can join and it's free.  You need to register for this meetup event.  We have a max limit of 60 people.

We need people of all disciplines; sound engineers, musicians, coders, scripters, writers, digital painters, modellers, animators, managers, actors...

Depending on which competitions you want to participate in, you can form teams beforehand or join a team when you get there either on the Friday.

What is the format?

• Friday 5-6pm  |  Start arriving meet and greet

• 6pm  |  Introduction, announcements and discussion

• 6:20pm  |  Official Start:  Reveal of challenges & competitions.  Open studio begins

• 11pm  |  Closedown - go home and sleep

• Saturday 8am - 1pm | Open studio

• 1pm - 2pm | Fully Catered Lunch (thanks Microsoft!)

• 2pm - 11pm  |  Open studio

• Announce Ludum Dare! (Time TBA)

• Sunday 8am - 6pm  |  Open studio

• 7pm  |  Set up presentations and present

• 8pm  |  Event finishes - pub time?

What do I bring?

Everything.  We will provide power outlets and WiFi.  The rest is up to you.

How do I participate?

Just register for this meetup event.

For more info stay tuned to, and discuss on, this page

What competitions are running?

The Good Food Game are providing food prizes for a competition around promoting healthy eating.  More info will be provided in the info pack closer to the day.

LudumDare30 starts on Saturday (around 3pm) and this will be a chance to work on that.

We have a list of optional challenges you can complete for glory that will be released closer to the date.

Volunteers, setup and sponsorship

Thanks to our volunteers:  Andrew Morrison, Britta Pollmuller, Steffan Hooper and Lianne Booton.

And special thanks to our sponsors:  Microsoft, The Good Food Game, Colab PIGsty, AUT University and the NZGDA.

The Microsoft KiwiJam14 Unity Camp!!!

Last year some people said that they would have liked to have come to a workshop.  So Microsoft have offered to run one.  Thanks Microsoft!  You can do both the workshop AND the game-jam (although that's not really what it was designed to do).  For more info and to register - go here.

Cheers,

Ben

Hi all, impressed by the creative energy generated over the weekend. It was cool to see ideas discussed on the Friday get transformed into reality by Sunday . Ben you did an awesome job and responded to about a million emails

I'd like to here from those that didn't return - What was it that didn't work for you - what could be done differently ?

I smell a local coffee roaster sponsorship deal on the horizon.

I didn't come on Sunday til presentation because I got caught up working on the game at the place I crashed

  • Ben Tuhoe K.

Hi all! Please bring your games along to the meetup next week on Wednesday September 3rd so people can see what happened. The announcement is live now.

Thanks guys for the awesome weekend, especially the event hosts!

For anyone interested - we are planning to integrate all the behind-the-scenes stuff we had ready for our game as we didn't end up getting around to merging everyone's work together before the end. All the art, effects, UI, etc were actually already completed and mostly just not tied into the Editor or hooked into the code so it shouldn't take us very long to get the intended final product built.

We will link a downloadable build when we get around to piecing it together; I currently have a deadline for another project so it might be a couple weeks from now that I get time but keep checking back on this page until then if you are interested.

A weekly colab space would be rad! The environment and people does wonders for productivity and creative stimulation. Also, Ben, putting my hand up for assisting with NZGDA related stuff. We can talk about it when you're free.

      August 25, 2014

    • Ben Tuhoe K.

That's excellent. I'll be in touch soon regarding some of the events in September and October.

An enjoyable and truly fascinating weekend. Thanks to everyone for your support and for being so accommodating to a novice in the game makers space.
Entries for the goodfoodgame competition need to be in on Tuesday 25 so if you have a concept get it through in whatever form you can. Cheers, John

Cheers Regan! These panorama shots really capture what it is like to be there sitting, head in hand, or hands on keys making games - concentrating hard & being creative.

Some last minute announcements. There is a fridge in the studio for those wanting to store food for the weekend. Stay tuned to @PIGsty_AUT on Twitter for more announcements. The official hashtag is #kiwijam14 so keep an eye on that too. I will be uploading the official handbook with all of the rules and competitions etc at about 5pm. If you were thinking of installing Unity Pro we recommend installing the trial version before coming - installing using the temporary codes will just slow you down. If you are coming tonight - I'll see you later this afternoon. I'll be teaching until then. GLHF!

Our team of 4 would love to have a sound person join us. You don't need to be a pro, if you're up for mumbling into a phone recording... you're pro enough.

would be cool to have someone dedicated to just sound for our project, keen to work with you if you're interested.

    August 21, 2014

    • Andrey S.

I'd love to join. I'm not a pro in sound, but I not a complete newbie either. And I have a laptop with necessary sound software.

      August 21, 2014

If your coming Fri night you can check yourself an rely on the basics then decide what to bring sat morning. But I think Maya is there.

      August 21, 2014

  • Chad E.

I'm gonna bring my whole PC... Is that legit?

    August 20, 2014

    • Ben Tuhoe K.

Sure. Space is tight though so be considerate. Also make sure you bring a powerboard.

      August 20, 2014

I saw this way too late! Is there a waiting list I could go on? I really would like to go if it's possible. I am a writer, use Illustrator, Photoshop, FCP X and more, also I can bring cake.
Did I say cake? I meant cakes.

    Afternoon Hosts,

I had a question, personally I am not a developer of 'games' but currently working a side project gaming related and was hoping this would actually give me an opportunity to meet some people working with 'games' - to get feed back and suggestions. I did not want to seem like I would be out of place at the event?

Also, I am actually hoping to get away from work for a change and socialize.

    August 12, 2014

    • Ben Tuhoe K.

Hi Ryan. This isn't really a 'meetup'. That's what the monthly meetups are for. All people coming to the KiwiJam14 Game-Jam are expected to join in on making games. Having said that, we're always looking for newbies that can bring something new to the table. Maybe you can draw, or voice act for a team. A helping hand is always useful. Also - there is a Unity3D workshop being run at the same time next door. The idea is that it will e a different group of people but you can do both the game-jam and the workshop if you want. Or or could do the workshop and then come across and check out the game-jam briefly before going home. I'm about to post the link to the workshop in the description above.

      August 12, 2014

  • Lianne B.

For those doing Ludum Dare at the same time the Theme Slaughter has begun, so help choose a good one to make game-jamming a lot more fun :) http://ludumdare.com/theme

    August 11, 2014

  • Andrew M.

Hi Ben, can you send me a list of the shared resources and I'll use google calendar to manage the booking, unless someone has a better idea

    August 4, 2014

    • Ben Tuhoe K.

Let's talk about this kinda thing tomorrow night.

      August 5, 2014

  • Benjamin R.

Would we be staying on site like at Global Game Jam?

    August 4, 2014

    • Lianne B.

I believe the saying goes "You don't have to go home, but you can't stay here" ;)

Last year people left at night and there were no overnight stayers, I'm assuming that will be the case again this year.

      August 4, 2014

    • Ben Tuhoe K.

At this point they'll actually kick us out - if I apply for overnight stay then we need a staff member to stay behind all night. And all that we really accomplish is moving your bedtime from midnight to 10AM the next morning. Sleep is good - go home and get some. Buses run quite late.

Hi, new to this thing. When you say "anyone can join" does that mean any discipline of any skill level?

    August 2, 2014

    • Ben Tuhoe K.

Absolutely anyone. Just remember you're "on your own". You can form or join teams but it's not a workshop. Just 48 hours of making games.

      August 2, 2014

If my weekend is free I'm down

    July 25, 2014

      1 · July 25, 2014

I was going to participate in Ludum Dare 30 that weekend. Glad this ties in with that. Should be good!

    July 24, 2014

    • Ben Tuhoe K.

Yea we'll do some sort of ritual when the theme is released. Until then I guess you can eith help others or "get in the zone".

    July 23, 2014

Typing of the dead. Great game.

      July 23, 2014

I guess I can use this time to practice game design, I'm alright with coding (sadly only in Java) but pretty horrible at thinking up game ideas.
