SFPUG July: Lessons learned from managing way too many database servers

Who: Rob Wultsch, Facebook

What: Tips on managing 1000's of database servers

Where: CBS Interactive (CNET)

When: Tuesday July 12th, 7pm (doors open at 6:30)

Rob Wultsch, a recent addition to Facebook's DBA Operations team, will compare and contrast the Facebook deployment with his previous work with another large deployment of open source databases.  In this db-agnostic talk, he'll go over: the bizarre becoming ordinary, the
many types of infrastructure that do not scale and what does and does not work when building a DBA team.

Note: this is a joint meetup with the San Francisco MySQL Meetup.   Members of that meetup can also RSVP at the MySQL Meetup page.  Please only RSVP in one place, though.

IMPORTANT: you must bring a photo ID in order to sign in at the venue.

Event generously hosted by CBS Interactive, and food sponsored by Percona. Yaaay Percona!  Drinks sponsored by PostgreSQL Experts

This was my 2nd time hearing Rob talk (first was at PG west - two mysql talks at two Postgres events in one year is one to many, IMO). The material in this talk was even less useful than the MySQL vs. PG talk back in November. Looking forward to the next few meetups though, as the lineup that Josh described for the upcoming meetups sounds amazing.

The presentation was well organized. The speaker said "It is what it is" too often. It would have been nice if he could have given more concrete information about FB's installation; I think FB is too protective of their configuration.

We will be recording video of the talk. However, it might take a while to get the video posted online.

One of you attendees has to have a flip, bring it & record this! Good sound is important too, so maybe a portable recorder in Rob's shirt pocket...
