Announcing a new Meetup for Prague Spring, NYC Chapter!

What: Book Club - "Are We Rome" by Cullen Murphy

When: July 8,[masked]:30 PM

Where: (A location has not been chosen yet.)

Meetup Description: Book Club: "Are We Rome" by Cullen Murphy

The book starts with a caveat that history is just that and efforts to find to many analogies with the present can be misleading. Murphy points out two very important causes for the decline of the Roman empire, namely the privatization of the military and corruption in government. Murphy takes pains to point out that although these features have surfaced in the United States, a much more aware middle class will probably be able to steer the country from sharing Rome's fate.

Here's the NYT review if you are interested, but instead of reading everything about the book before deciding to buy/read it, you could just browse the Amazon reviews to get an idea.

I was away on vacation, and hence we haven't had a meet-up in a while. So I thought of starting with a short book which can get the ball rolling. If you're one of the regulars, or you've just joined and were missing the meetups, my apologies. We'll be having more regular meet-ups from now on. Also you might have noticed that we are now Prague-Spring, and Lee will be organizing the moderated discussion forums. I believe many among you were already members of both groups, so this should really not pose any inconvenience.
