Reporting on the Israeli storming of the Turkish humanitarian aid shp in international waters

As far aI know, the American Mainstream Media has only provided the following context from the Israeli Government: "We were attacked." A more sober byline would be "We were attacked" (after we boarded at 4 a.m. an unarmed ship bringing humanitarian aid with armed commandos that immediately opened fire).

Al Jazeera reported

"Free Gaza Movement, the organisers of the flotilla, however, said the troops opened fire as soon as they stormed the convoy."

Journalists on board the ship were not allowed to leave their ship with film or their cameras. In the assault, one camera man was attacked and his camera was smashed. The Israelis have only released short clips without time stamps supporting their narrative and controlling the propaganda campaign.

The American media has only reported the Israeli version as far as I know. For example, CNN's website reports

"An Israeli commando said upon descending into a boat with ropes, he was immediately attacked by a group of people.

"They beat us up with metal sticks and knives," he said. "There was live fire at some point against us... They were shooting at us from below deck."

Some of the soldiers were tossed from the top deck to a lower deck by the activists, and jumped in the water to save themselves, he said.
Video: 'It's outrageous'

Activists grabbed soldiers and tried to hold them hostage, stripping them of their helmets and equipment, he said. About 30 activists, all speaking Arabic, carried out the attack, he said.

Activists have said the Israeli soldiers opened fire on unarmed civilians. Neither account could be independently verified by CNN."

This country lionizes the passengers of flight 93 for trying to overtake the 911 hijackers over Pennsylvania. Are we supposed to support an armed incursion at night in international waters on a civilian ship because the aid workers fight back?

Another intriguing point as reported by the New York Times. "Around 4 a.m. on Monday, naval commandos came aboard the Mavi Marmara, having been lowered by ropes from helicopters onto the decks.

At that point, the operation seems to have gone badly wrong.

Israeli officials say that the soldiers were dropped into an ambush and were attacked with clubs, metal rods and knives."

So let's get this straight. The humanitarian aid workers were waiting in ambush for an assault at 4 a.m.?

In an updated article, the New York Times reports "Israel said the violence was instigated by pro-Palestinian activists who presented themselves as humanitarians but had come ready for a fight. Organizers of the flotilla accused the Israeli forces of opening fire as soon as they landed on the deck, and released videos to support their case."

Further, the New York Times equates violence (as the Israelis readily use) with confrontation by publishing the immediately following sentence in the same paragraph. "On Tuesday, activists promised more confrontation. Greta Berlin of the Free Gaza Movement, which organized the flotilla, said that another cargo boat was heading to Gaza from the coast of Italy , but said the vessel would be picking up additional activists and journalists, and was not expected to reach Gaza until Monday."

It's time for the New York Times to adopt the slogan of "fair and balanced" reporting.

A response to the Israeli Ambassador's Op-Ed - An Assault on Israel, Cloaked in Peace -

Nice spin by Israel’s Ambassador to the United States, Michael B. Oren.

4 a.m.

A peaceful, restrained country does not board ships under the flag of another country in international waters using military assault tactics at 4 a.m. That is the definition of piracy.

The weapons displayed immediately after the operation were portrayed as evidence of an ambush. Anyone who saw these weapons would know it was standard gear on a ship and improvised for use as self-defense. At 4 a.m., facing an armed assault, the natural inclination is to defend oneself using whatever you can find. By any definition of ambush, this is laughable.

9 dead were killed by live bullets, not crowd-dispersing paintball guns.

The Israelis smashed all recording and camera equipment on all of the ships in the flotilla. Only limited Israeli video has been released, not all, uncensored footage. A night time raid would prevent most of the visual recording of the event except for those who had night vision equipment, i.e. the IDF. The propaganda campaign to control the view of the assault was planned before the assault even began. After being taken prisoner, passengers and seamen were released without any of their personal items*, so the IDF has carefully controlled any evidence that might counter their propaganda.
1. How can any claims of what the IDF encountered or found be considered credible under these circumstances? Especially after so many released prisoners, in uncoordinated interviews, have directly countered the Israeli version of the events.
2. How can the Israeli Government be considered anywhere near credible to conduct a fair investigation of itself?

The IDF could have waited until the flotilla entered Israeli or Gazan waters and boarded the ships in daylight. The IDF knew the flotilla planned on not resisting such an action, but that would only have further highlighted Israel's starvation & decimation of the economy in the Gaza ghetto. Instead Israel chose a nighttime assault that would instigate a conflict and allow it to launch a propaganda campaign afterwards, the key to its operation. And then Israel and its supporters have the audacity to call peace activists terrorists.

9 people are dead to serve Israel's political purposes.

9 people were killed by state-organized pirates at 4 a.m.

* Based upon a prisoner's interview, but nothing contrary has been revealed

Lies of the Israeli Assault

The assault was in large part a PR campaign. Turning away help for an oppressed ghetto while labeling the helpers as instigators and terrorists. The IDF initially claimed the activists included Al Qaeda members. The willingness of the Israeli propaganda machine to lie so readily shows how an Israeli investigation cannot be trusted.

"First [Max Blumenthal] found this press release where the IDF claimed that forty people onboard the Mavi Marmara were al-Qaeda mercenaries, and their evidence was that they had night-vision goggles and possibly gas masks, which clearly proves ... See Morethey’re linked to bin Laden."

"The second lie we were able to basically prove was that the IDF had doctored the footage you played, which sounds sort of like a prank call by a mentally deficient pre-adolescent. And clearly what the IDF and what the Israeli government is trying to do is present the confrontation with the flotilla in the context of the Holocaust to further incite nationalistic sentiment among the Israeli public. And it succeeded. But they have admitted that they doctored the footage and have now released, after releasing a previous audio clip, which showed—which presented entirely different audio from the same exchange, a new audio clip presenting different audio, which they claim is the full exchange. But now they’ve claimed that a lot of this audio did not come from the Mavi Marmara, the Turkish ship. So their story isn’t holding up."

And what this demonstrates is that nothing that the IDF says can be trusted

No Choice, but an Independent Commission to Investigate the Assault

Not one of the activists recordings have been released by Israel. Why won't Israel release any and all of the tapes? What are they afraid to show? Why won't Israel release all of its own recordings? Obviously, the Israeli objective is to control the narrative. So how could Israel be trusted to conduct an objective internal investigation. It can't.

Here is one account from an activist with clips from her one hour of smuggled footage. New Video Smuggled Out from Mavi Marmara of Israel’s Deadly Assault on Gaza Aid Flotilla

The full hour of filmmaker and activist Iara Lee's smuggled footage will be released later today.

Israel Objects to Rockets with Limited Targeting Ability, but Continues to Conduct a War Against Gaza

McClatchy Newspapers has obtained an Israeli document showing that the blockade is not about Israeli security, but an attempt to economically crush the Gaza ghetto that elected Hamas in a free and fair election.

Israeli document: Gaza blockade isn't about security
Sheera Frenkel | McClatchy Newspapers
last updated: June 09, 2010 06:24:03 PM

"A country has the right to decide that it chooses not to engage in economic relations or to give economic assistance to the other party to the conflict, or that it wishes to operate using 'economic warfare,'" the [Israeli] government said.

Here is the link to the full hour of filmmaker and activist Iara Lee's smuggled footage. A 15 minuted edited version is below the full 1 hour and 2 minute version, presumably for showing the most relevant portions of the footage.

When you watch the full hour version, you can tell this anything but a "terrorist" "ambush". Yet if the Israelis had it their way, such revealing footage countering their claims would never see the light of day

Here are the Israeli Commandos "defending themselves" by kicking and shooting point blank someone on the deck of the ship.

The version above is a 22 second edited version making its way around the internet. Here is the full 3:29 version.

If Israel is going to so blatantly lie about their conduct to gain political advantage, how can they be trusted to conduct and objective internal investigation?

Even Israeli Naval Reserve Officers are calling for an independent international investigation.

The activists are releasing full footage when available. Unfortunately, Israel confiscated everything they could to control the narrative. The activists are not afraid of revealing the truth. Why are the Israelis?

The Israelis claim these pictures are proof that the activists wanted to "lynch" the soldiers. First of all, when heavily-armed IDF commandos storm a boat in the dead of night in international waters, do they think there will be no resistance even if the activists have no weapons. The injuries shown are relatively minor compared to what an "ambush" with "guns" would have accomplished against troops repelling onto a ship.

Second of all this propaganda again falls on its face. From the full hour version of filmmaker and activist Iara Lee's smuggled footage, you can see the Israeli soldiers were being treated below deck. Hardly, evidence of an intent to lynch their attackers.
