Router firmwares - Maandelijkse bijeenkomst - Maart

Details

De Den Bosch Linux Users Group houdt zijn maandelijkse bijeenkomsten op de eerste dinsdag van de maand. Toegang is gratis.

Het thema voor maart is router firmwares (zoals DD-WRT, OpenWrt en Tomato).

Descripties van de verschillende projecten (van eigen webpages of Wikipedia):

DD-WRT (http://www.dd-wrt.com) is a Linux based alternative OpenSource firmware suitable for a great variety of WLAN routers and embedded systems. The main emphasis lies on providing the easiest possible handling while at the same time supporting a great number of functionalities within the framework of the respective hardware platform used.

OpenWrt (https://openwrt.org/) is described as a Linux distribution for embedded devices. Instead of trying to create a single, static firmware, OpenWrt provides a fully writable filesystem with package management. This frees you from the application selection and configuration provided by the vendor and allows you to customize the device through the use of packages to suit any application. For developer, OpenWrt is the framework to build an application without having to build a complete firmware around it; for users this means the ability for full customization, to use the device in ways never envisioned.

Tomato Firmware (http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato) is a partially free HyperWRT-based, Linux core firmware distribution for a range of Broadcom chipset based wireless routers, most notably the older-model Linksys WRT54G (including the WRT54GL and WRT54GS), Buffalo AirStation, Asus Routers and Netgear's WNR3500L. Among other notable features is the user interface, which makes heavy use of AJAX as well as an SVG-based graphical bandwidth monitor. The backend is GPL licensed, but the frontend is proprietary.
