Earlier this month I testified at the Michigan Senate Agriculture Committee Hearing in support of S.B. 560, to regulate large-scale breeders. It will close the loop hole on licensing and provide guidelines for care. It will also cap the number of adult dogs to 50. Go to the MPAW blog for the full report on the hearing.

We do not feel our current laws are strong enough to deter commercial breeders. Some counties do not even have animal control officers and kennel licenses are not required. The USDA should not be regulating our large-scale breeders and they don’t have a history of enforcement. There is no limit. The USDA licenses mega mills! Even with the new rule to crack down on internet sellers, those selling directly to the public will be exempt and again there is no limit.

We need your help now!

Three members of the committee need to hear from animal people in their districts in support of dog breeder regulations to prevent cases like that pictured here. If you a voter in one of these areas, now is the time to call:

Sen. Booher: Kalkaska, Leelanau, Benzie, Manistee, Wexford, Missaukee, Roscommon, Lake, Osceola, Clare, and Mecosta counties [masked])

Sen. Hansen: Mason, Oceana, Newaygo, Muskegon counties [masked])

Sen. Hune: Shiawassee, Livingston, and southern Ingham counties [masked])
