Qualcomm's Open Source Portal team has graciously provided sponsorship for this event. The event will be held in Qualcomm's Cafe S on the 2nd (top) floor.

Request: If you are RSVP'ed and have a video camera and could help record the talks, please let us know in the comments below!

Directions/Parking:

click on the images for a better view

Enter at the second entrance where the security guard is. There should be paint on the ground saying "visitor entrance". You may have to talk to a security guard but just tell him you're here for San Diego Python and everything should be fine.

Park in the parking structure or you can park safely on the street if you prefer. There will be a couple people roaming around between 915 and 945 or so pointing people in the right direction and there are signs if you arrive after. Building S is a 2-story building between two 7-story buildings.

Great job, very nice venue. I appreciated that some of the talks used the same dataset. I would have loved to see a longer version of the census data talk too.

Lots of people signed up and didn't show. However, there's plenty of room for anybody who is on the wait list.

Do we need our laptop or will these strictly be lectures? Also, I have a digital HD camera (handheld). I don't have a tripod, but I may be able to borrow one and mic from work. Let me know if you still need them.

    April 14, 2013

    • Lindsay H.

Bill if you could bring your tripod that would be cool!

      April 15, 2013

    • Dave C.

I don't think you need a laptop if you don't care to follow along that way.

Definitely interested in attending this. Lots of data on my website.

      April 16, 2013

  • Dave S.

Already did un-RSVP. But super-bummed to miss it. The threats people have been making to video the session would be very much appreciated. Especially if it's going to be very lecture based!

    April 16, 2013

  • David F.

So apparently there are WAY more people interested in coming to this than we were expecting. Most of our past events had about 30 people show up on the day of the event and we didn't think this would be any different.

If you aren't planning to make the event, please please un-RSVP so that somebody can take your spot.

It looks like we'll have to start planning our next data analysis workshop.

    April 16, 2013

If you have RSVP'ed and have a digital video camera that we could use to record, please let us know so we can share the presentations with those who can't attend.

I have an iPhone 5 and an even better Panasonic ZS3, but all these cameras have 1/2.33" sensors, which are too tiny for good indoor photography. We need something like a micro-4/3rds (Olympus), APS-C, or larger sensor to take legible indoor video .. Most cameras today can record in MP4 or AVCHD (same thing), so 2-8 GB is plenty of storage for the whole show.

I've got a DSLR (T3i) but reviews say battery is good for maybe 1 hour of video. I'll see if I can hack a supply for it. Otherwise, I can bring a shotgun mic, tripod, cables and other stuff and maybe use the mic with someone's video cam if the DSLR doesn't work out.

There are lots of people looking to attend this event. It is a lot more popular than we expected. I ask you to please please please RSVP no if you will be unable to come. We want everybody who wants to attend to come but the room we are using only holds 50.

Hopefully I don't have to start keeping track of people who RSVP yes to events and don't show up in the end.

    April 10, 2013

  • Louis B.

I am new and particularly interested in Natural Language Processing and graphing large data

    April 3, 2013

  • David F.

The schedule is up! It's subject to change but I'd say the speakers and topics are pretty firm. We might add a couple other short talks. Feel free to volunteer as a speaker if you're working on anything awesome you'd like to show off.

The room is listed as holding 44 but 50 or so shouldn't be a problem. If you can't make it, please RSVP no and open up a spot for somebody who can go. I expect that the wait list will empty out and everybody who wants to go can go. If you want to go, please wait list so we can get semi-accurate head counts.

I'll volunteer to talk about numpy arrays and maybe wx.lib.plot. Would anyone like to tag team on the numpy arrays?

Yay. Saturdays. I can do Saturdays...

Well, we have a date, so it must be real.

Two recent books may be of interest:

    Python for Data Analysis: http://www.amazon.com/Python-Data-Analysis-Wes-McKinney/dp/1449319793

    Numpy Cookbook: http://www.amazon.com/NumPy-Cookbook-Ivan-Idris/dp/1849518920

I've only looked at the Kindle samples of these, but the samples look actually readable, not something that can be said for all Kindle programming books.

Yep, I just got Python for Data Analysis, have to spend some time going through it.
