QS Show & Tell #30 (CCA in SF)

  • Jun 27, 2013 · 6:00 PM
  • Timken Lecture Hall California College of the Arts

Please join us on June 27th for an exciting evening of self-tracking presentations, tools demonstrations, and amazing conversation.

We're happy to hosted by our friends at the California College of Arts. Be sure to RSVP early to grab your spot! Come to meet new people, check out new hands-on gadgets and tools, enjoy healthy food, and learn from personal stories.

6 -7:30 pm SOCIAL TIME & DEMOS

If you have a self-tracking project, gadget, app, or idea you'd like to share or demo, but you don't want to get up and talk about it, the workshop hour is perfect for you.You don't need to have a prepared talk, just let us know if you want to participate.

Just to be clear, we save the talks for personal accounts of self-tracking and self-experimentation, rather than sales/investor pitches. But of course we are also interested in tools! If you are making something useful for self-trackers – software, hardware, web services, or data standards – please demo it in this workshop portion of the Show&Tell.

We'll also have some light snacks and refreshments available during this social time.

7:30 pm – 9 pm IGNITE SHOW&TELLS

If you'd like to talk about your personal self-tracking story, please let us know in your RSVP so we can discuss your topic. In your talk, you should answer the three prime questions: What did you do? How did you do it? What did you learn?

If you've never been to a meetup before, you can get a sense of what the talks are like from watching videos of previous QS talks.

Don't know what Ignite means? Click here for more info and here for tips on how to deliver a fantastic quick-fire presentation.

9 - 10 pm SOCIAL TIME

Talk to the speakers, chat with new and old friends, ask other people what they're tracking, and generally hang out and have a great time.

QS SPONSORS: Our thanks to the California College of Arts!

A fantastic space is generously being provided by our friends at the CCA! Thanks too to Intel, Autodesk, 23andMe, and Scanadu, our annual sponsors, for supporting the Quantified Self movement across the country and around the world. Four cheers to them for making our gathering possible!

We use the sponsor money and meetup donations to pay for professional video recording, incidental venue costs, and awesome, healthy refreshments, as well as to fund projects that help the larger QS community. If you or your company are interested in sponsoring Quantified Self, or hosting a future meetup at your office, please let us know.

Thank you and see you there!

Thank you everybody who came and presented! Thank you for the food comments; I hear you. In the past we've had to throw out a lot of food, which seems terribly wasteful. We went minimalist this time but obviously we went too far. We'll adjust.

Attended last night expecting more of a technology / tool orientation. Pleasantly proven wrong - it was about problem definition, analysis, and insight, and was highly relatable.

Would love to learn more about how to incentivize and modify behavior of the "common guy" who's not as analytical and disciplined as this group is!

I too agree that it would've been great if we had an idea on what food and beverages to expect - especially if we're ending after 9pm.

    Thank you again for organizing!

    Good presentations.
The meeting area was horribly noisy!
Food was very disappointing. Most 'good' meetups provide at least pizza, or are located near food courts. FYI veggies and dip are cheap, gluten-free and healthy:) At the least an email should go out to let people know what kind of food and beverage will be available so they can bring their own if necessary. This is especially important for 'quantified self'!

We just soft-launched a personal coaching service for men building on behavioral science and establishing habits as well as making use of quantified self devices. Check it out and if you like it, feel free to sign up (takes 30 sec and no commitments) and we'll keep you updated until we officially launch with the service in September!

Hi Troy - will you add your idea for a talk to the RSVP? That's where we typically gather them.

      June 5, 2013

    • Troy A.

Sure, hopefully this is the right spot... I've been using a lot of different tools to help me train for some upcoming civilian / military style events, in particular multi-day GoRuck and SEALFit events. I did a talk in Palo Alto on this that I'd love to update to share my learnings with people about tools that work, tools that don't, and how I've been constantly adjusting the mix of tools and trying to simplify them. Let me know if you're interested. Happy to chat with you offline about it more.
