QS Show&Tell #19 (Singularity University in Mountain View)

Get ready for the first Bay Area QS meetup since the blowout global conference! In case you missed it, catch the coverage on the Quantified Self Blog, in the MIT Technology Review, or join the ongoing discussion on the QSwiki.

Join us July 19th for another night of self-tracking presentations, sharing ideas, and showing tools - but this time, with a few new elements.

IGNITE AND ENTREPRENEURS!

Not only will we be at Singularity University in Mountain View for the first time, but we will be doing the Show&Tell Ignite style!  And Eri, our newest organizer, will be kicking off QS for startups, a new meetup group where startups and entrepreneurs can come to present their self-tracking gear and apps.

Tonight's Show&Tell is for everyone. Read: You do NOT need to be an entrepreneur to present! But, if you are, you can also present, and will have many opportunities in the future for it in the new group!

Don't know what Ignite means? Click here for more info and here for tips on how to deliver a fantastic quick-fire presentation.

6 -7:30 pm SOCIAL HOUR AND WORKSHOP

Think: "science fair" for adults.

If you have a self-tracking project, gadget, app, or idea you'd like to share or demo, but you don't want to get up and talk about it, the workshop hour is perfect for you.

You don't need to have a prepared talk, or permission to show something. Just come and bring what you have. We will have tables and power strips where you can plug in a laptop if you like, but paper is good too.

Just to be clear, we save the talks for personal accounts of self-tracking and self-experimentation, rather than sales/investor pitches. But of course we are also interested in tools! If you are making something useful for self-trackers – software, hardware, web services, or data standards – please demo it in this workshop portion of the Show&Tell.

7:30 pm – 9 pm QS SHOW&TELL TALKS

If you'd like to talk about your project, please let us know in advance so we can discuss your topic and how much time you'll need.

QS SPONSORS: OUR THANKS TO SINGULARITY UNIVERSITY

A fantastic space is generously being provided by Singularity University. Thanks too to Basis, HealthTap and  CureTogether, our annual sponsors, for supporting the Quantified Self movement expansion across the country and around the world.

Three cheers to them for making our gathering possible!

QS SPONSORSHIP - WHAT IT IS

We use the sponsor money to pay for professional video recording and healthy refreshments, as well as to fund projects that help the larger QS community. If you or your company are interested in sponsoring Quantified Self, please let us know.

We are also asking for an optional $5 donation to help cover the out-of-pocket costs of running the meetups. If you'd like to donate more than $5, please do!

Thank you and see you there!

Enjoyed it, would have really liked more time at the end to chat and catch-up with folks.. Might have been cool to have all the speakers hang around in designated areas for a little while to facilitate follow-up.

Great meetup! I would suggest limiting the Ignite talks to less than one hour...my sponge was 110% saturated. :)

In retrospect, it's a bit more obvious, but I went to represent a startup that analyses your communications and digital habits, and didn't realize that the focus would be so strongly on medical-related analysis. I did learn quite a bit and met some cool people, but there was a bit less overlap of goals/interests than I hoped.

This event convinced me that every presentation at every event should always be an ignite talk. That and the QS rule to talk about what you have learned from your experiments are a great combination. The set of talks at this meetup was the strongest of any QS meetup I have been to. With the exception of the medhelp guy (and the yum yum guy was on the edge), everyone stuck to the QS rule and the experiments and the results were fascinating. The space at SU was a great venue although obviously not super-convenient from SF.

demos were great - wish there were more
more could be done to facilitate the social hour, especially for newcomers - name tags. signs on tables for areas of specific interest, etc.

5min format was great. Would have been nicer to have handouts on the speaker schedule ahead of time.

nice new format to keep everything moving! Great venue too, although quite a haul from Oakland...perhaps we need a QS East Bay?!

Eclectic group of speakers and interesting demos (mostly from the speakers). Meetup could be improved by having some stickers (or pre-printed labels like some meetups) and also providing some 'real' food - a few almonds doesn't count! (rant over)

If you can't make it or are just interested in connecting with others fascinated with the ideas of constant improvement, I'll be taking short video clips of some of the people I'll be running into tonight. I'll post the video on YouTube and link to it from my Facebook page www.AltonSunPhoto.com
I'll only interview people who are comfortable sharing their info and who are open to others contacting them so everyone wins and can have their specialties and talents shared in a medium that is virtual

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
