The Raleigh Knitting Meetup Pages

Hi all you Raleigh knitters out there! I hope you're as excited as we are about this meetup group, which allows us all to knit or crochet in each other's company and to trade patterns, techniques and stories. We began the group so that we would be required to set aside time to relax and knit, but also to help build a sense of community in this town and to meet people that we might not otherwise meet in our daily circles of work and life.

We generally meet three times a week and at different locations. Weekday meetups rotate between Panera Bread in North Hills, Starbucks on Lake Boone Trail, Panera Bread on Six Forks, and Cafe Carolina in Cary, and every Sunday we meet at It's a Grind on Falls of the Neuse. Weekday meetups start at 6/6:30 pm and weekend meetups start at 3:00 pm. We also have a Saturday morning meetup at 9:00 am at Great Harvest Bread Company/Yarn Tree Studio.

Knitters of all skill levels are encouraged to participate, though your organizers may not possess adequate skill to be much help for those having trouble working through their patterns. Luckily there are some pretty talented people in the group! We are all ages, all backgrounds, and we always welcome new people. Hope you can join us!

A few notes about the group...

1. Annual membership dues of $5 will be due by February 1st each year. New members can try out the group for two meetups and then must pay dues to remain a member, which will be prorated for the remaining year. New members joining between March 1st and July 31 will pay $5.00 for the entire year. New members, who join between August 1 and December 31, will pay a prorated fee of $2.50 for half of the year. Dues money collected beyond the $144 meetup site fee will be used for special group events and projects. Nonpayment will result in being dropped from the group.

2. If you RSVP for a meetup, please plan to attend. If your plans change, please change your RSVP to make room for someone else. We have to limit the RSVP number because of limited seating.

3. If you are the first one to arrive, don't panic...knitters are on the way! Either grab a coffee or a good spot to knit with lots of chairs.

If you're new to knitting, we'd be glad to teach you how to knit and get you started on your first project. A garter stitch scarf is a good beginner project. Bring with you either 1) a Bulky weight yarn, such as Lion Brand Wool-Ease Chunky, and size 10 straight knitting needles or 2) a Worsted (medium) weight yarn, such as Lion Brand Wool-Ease, and size 8 straight knitting needles. (The yarns above are suggested because they are relatively easy to find in any craft store, even Wal-mart, and they are relatively inexpensive, but any bulky or worsted weight yarn will do. Just check the label and make sure to get the corresponding needle size for the yarn weight listed above.) Feel free to e-mail Megan, Deb, or Melanie if you have any questions before the meeting.
