We bring to you the First ?LET Silent Auction & Wine Tasting event?, November 7, 2008 in support of the ?Lewa Education Trust? (LET).
The Lewa Education Trust (LET) was formed in 2001 and now supports nine schools in its surrounding communities. Lewa builds schools, provides school lunch programs, trains teachers, provides secondary education scholarships, funds orphan programs and provides free field trips to visit wildlife that many of these youngsters have never seen. See www.lewa.org for more info.
Our goal is to raise $10,000 through the ?LET Auction & Wine Tasting? in 2008. The downturn in tourism due to unrest caused by the elections in January has left a huge gap in the support for education in Kenya. We want school lunch programs and educational facilities for these children to continue. Please help us provide the additional funding that is so desperately needed for these programs to continue.
Lewa Wildlife Conservancy (LWC) is a 77,000 acre protected area at the foothills of Mt. Kenya near Isiolo Kenya. Lewa is home to over 10% of Kenya's Black rhino population, 25% of the world's Grevy Zebra population and hundreds of plants and animals from orchids to elephants. The Lewa Wildlife Conservancy works as a catalyst for the conservation of wildlife and its habitat. It does this through the protection and management of species, the initiation and support of community conservation and development programs, and the education of neighboring areas in the value of wildlife.
Wildlife must bring tangible benefits to the communities surrounding Lewa if the people are to view it as an asset rather than a liability. It must be known that wildlife brings revenue through tourism and this revenue radiates outwards to the communities by providing schools, scholarships, hospitals and much more. LWC has been instrumental in community relations over the past 20 years. With the help of the communities, the wildlife will be protected and will survive for future generations to enjoy.
