RasPiJam #5 + Owncloud and XBMC

  • January 31, 2013 · 7:00 PM

Hola Jamigos!

Hope you've kicked your year off with a bang!

It's almost time for the first LRJ of 2013 and we want you to be there!

As usual we're encouraging everyone working on a Pi project to bring it along and hack away with it. If you can share some knowledge, we promise there'll be plenty of people willing to listen, if you're stuck with something, we promise you there'll be plenty of people willing to help. :)

We'll have the usual array of HD screens available for you early birds to hack away on, so we'll be welcoming you all from 7pm.

On top of that, we've also got a couple of great talks lined up from Ben Scarboro and Keith Dunlop

Ben's going to give a talk on OwnCloud - Where he'll be showing you how to use a Raspberry Pi to set up you very own private cloud based storage system (a la Dropbox / Sky Drive).

Keith Dunlop will be talking about something other than RISC OS for once <- I know!

Instead he'll be talking us through everybody's favourite Open Source media player XBMC so be sure to come along and find out all about that.

Both of these are fantastic projects for both first time tinkerers. Perfect for those that got a Pi but haven't got round to having a play with it just yet.

As always, if you'd like to give a demo or a brief talk, please drop us a message; we'd love to have you!

Until next Thursday!

May the Pi be with you.

Just bought myself a Pi now that it is readily available, and am looking forward to the next meet.

For anyone that is interested, here is a write up of the Software Defined Radio that I was working on the other night.

Excellent despite postponement of XBMC. Talked to people about Scratch and about RISC OS, and even demo'd Scratch running under Tim Rowledge's recent port of Squeak to RISC OS Pi.

Was great getting help setting up my Pi with SDR, I was able to listen to KMFM when I got home =D

Congrats Matthew - can't wait for the blog post on how you did it ;)

Hopefully I'll be able to do the XBMC thing next month. To put a positive spin on the last 24hrs (I badly need it) I'll, by then, have had over a month's usage of XBMC on a Pi by my parents to use as a real world example!

Great. Shame about the xbmc demo being resheduled but saw some interesting stuff and everyone was very friendly.

very interesting people friendly - more advance warning of change of schedule would have been good (I really only wanted to go for xbmc) - but still I enjoyed the event when I got there

There was no way any earlier warning could have been given. It was 10AM when it was realised that my presence was demanded :-( Sorry about that circumstances out of my control etc etc

Sadly the XBMC talk has had to be postponed due to work commitments, apologies to all who were looking forward to it.

Got a lot of inspiration tonight on things to use the Pi for. Hopefully I'll have something to bring in next month!

sorry I can't make this one, would love to hear the XBMC talk in particular - but this clashes with Monkigras.

Sorry guys, can't make it this time. Meanwhile I've finished my guitar tuner that I brought last time (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=...), but was not finished at that time. Maybe next time I'll be able to present it ;) Enjoy the session!

Ill bring the rc pi car again, its had some small refinements.. it doesn't drive in to walls at high speed quite so often now.

If anyone has a Pi-compatible USB mouse they don't want and want to sell, bring it along! Better to recycle tech than contribute to the waste problem (http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/88...), and even better to save time over eBay!
