This website will provide you with all you need to know about Codex Alimentarius (full law will be enacted Dec 31, 2009 but partial laws have already been made). Codex Alimentarius is tied to the WTO i.e. if your country is a member of the WTO you must implement Codex Alimentarius by Dec 31, 2009.

Follow the link to Codex from the side menu on the home page of this website.

Codex Alimentarius and Organic Foods - they are already changing the laws for organic food so that food which has been treated with the following chemicals can be labelled "organic":

  • sulphur dioxide which can cause allergic reactions in some people;
  • sodium nitrite and sodium nitrate which are potentially carcinogenic, and have been implicated in hyperactivity in children;
  • carrageenan which is associated with the formation of ulcers in the intestines and cancerous tumors in the gut;
  • ethylene which is used to artificially induce fruits and vegetables to ripen whilst they are in transit (hence depleting the vitamin/mineral content of the food by not allowing it to ripen naturally).

Codex Alimentarius and Genetically Modified Foods (GM Foods) - there will be no requirement for manufacturers or exporters of GM foods to disclose the presence of genetically modified organisms on their product labelling.

Codex Alimentarius - Guidelines for Vitamin and Mineral Food Supplements
These guidelines are very restrictive (they set very low maximum limits for the Recommended Daily Amount of any vitamin/mineral). When Codex becomes law it will either be illegal to purchase higher amounts or you will need a doctor's prescription. Only Pharmaceutical companies will be allowed to produce vitamin and mineral supplements. Only synthetic materials will be used (not organic). Drugs will be prohibitively expensive. This is not unfounded "scare tactics". These measures have already been implemented in a few countries, for example Germany and Norway.

Why would anyone do this? The Pharmaceutical companies make huge money from illnesses and pushing drugs to "cure" them. In reality they are not interested in a cure (most modern diseases can be prevented or cured by diet and herbs). The last thing they want is home made remedies. Unfortunately this brings us right back to the middle ages in Europe when people were burned at the stake and called witches for using herbal medicine.

How do you stop it? I do not have any faith in parliament because they are the ones pushing it through and from previous experience I have seen parliament ignore any evidence that does not suit their line of thinking! If you want to contact your MP (and any other MP), it is best to send a letter through the post, because they are required to respond to your letter. They are not required to respond to emails. However it does no harm to send emails - most likely they will be read but there is no guarantee. Petitions are useless - they do not count for much at all. Don't forget that MPs change at every election, so you will need to send new letters every time your MP changes. Realistically, this will take years to counteract. If you have nothing new to say, do not be shy to ask them for a progress report once each parliamentary term, to ensure they do not forget about the dangers of Codex Alimentarius.

It is also good to write letters to newspapers and TV stations (or phone in to TV stations when they have call-in programs). This raises public awareness as most people know nothing about Codex Alimentarius (or foolishly trust the government to "take care" of us and believe ignorance is bliss). When writing a letter to an MP or newspaper try to be succinct and get your points across in a "brief" manner. If you ramble on, people will turn off and not read the whole letter.

Finally, the best method of all is to challenge this in the courts. Ideally we would have a civil law suit on behalf of Canadians opposed to Codex - it would fall under the Charter of Rights and Freedom of Choice. Most Human Rights battles are won first in the courts and then afterwards in Parliament.
