To help out, this meetup aims to cover approaches to analysing data, from agile analysis to analysis when testing abroad...
Topics and speakers:
Done in a day: Collaborative real time analysis for agile teams
By Filip Healy (Amberlight)
Often designers, product managers and clients will say that they would like to do some usability testing of their designs before they launch, but that they simply don’t have any time to wait 2 or 3 weeks to get the results. In these scenarios we often need to dive into our ‘discount usability’ toolbox and suggest some kind of rapid testing approach or quick and dirty evaluation. The very same techniques also tend to work well with Agile teams where quick and frequent test cycles targeting a specific use case or area of functionality are more effective than big, detailed usability evaluations trying to cover the whole end to end experience of the product. One approach I’ve found very useful is ‘Active Testing’- a method that combines usability labwork with simultaneous collaborative analysis. In this talk I’ll explain how it works, when it should and shouldn’t be used and the benefits for the stakeholders.
Data analysis for Design Research: Approaches for modeling the problem/opportunity space
Nik Horn (Huddle)
The purpose of this task is to discuss some of the options and the processes involved in generating valuable outputs from generative research data.
Specifically, the session will cover tips for how to construct Mental models, Behavioural axis, User needs frameworks and Solution attributes.
The right tool for the job: Analysing messy data
Jaimes Nel (Connected Futures)
Analysing qualitative data can be a difficult task for precisely the reasons why it’s often so rich and rewarding. The messiness, small-scale and incomparability of isolated pieces of data make it hard to see connections between things and draw them together to make complex arguments. In this talk, I will compare some of the tools and techniques used by qualitative researchers, including a critical survey of the available software tools, arguing that we need to know our tools well before we can pick the right tool for the job. I also argue that we need to be clearer about analysis with our clients if we want to win more space/budget to do this critical work well.
Breaking the Language Barrier: Understanding fieldwork when you don't understand the fieldwork
Andrew Harder (Freelancer)
Products with an international market regularly need fieldwork done in international markets. This talk addresses a common challenge in those projects: how to do research in non-English speaking countries. Should you travel to fieldwork if you don't speak the language? Can you recruit English-speakers in foreign countries? How can you understand the context of what people say in a country you've never been to before? This practical talk will give you tools and tips to address your next international fieldwork.
Using mindmaps for quick analysis without compromising results
By GiGi Demming (Sony)
Video games development moves at a break neck pace. Dev teams often have very small windows in which they can change code to address issues raised in testing. Therefore, our user research team needs to turn around results as quickly as possible, but without compromising the findings. What I'll be presenting is how we use mindmap tagging to capture and analyse data from user testing in a way that helps us to present accurate findings to dev teams in less than 48hrs after testing is completed.
