Meetup #12: MONGO DB & CLOJURE SCRIPT (SOLD-OUT)

We decided to start year 2013 with a strong meeting with prestigious invitees. The meeting will take place in Auditorium Mistral, Amadeus.

Ross Lawley from 10Gen, the company who takes care of MongoDB will introduce us to MongoDB and how to work with it in Scala.

Some of you who were in Riviera Dev 2011 would never forget Bodil Stokke, one of the star speaker of the conference. And guess what! She's back, this time with Clojure Script (Clojure compiler to Java Script) presentation.

MONGO DB , SCALA and JVM LANGUAGES

MongoDB is a scalable and high performance NoSQL database. As a document-oriented database, MongoDB provides a unique advantage over the traditional SQL and other NoSQL databases - document structures enable more agile development, and MongoDB has been designed with scalability built in. Ross Lawley, from 10Gen -- the MongoDB company -- will introduce us to MongoDB in more detail, in particular integration with JVM languages like Scala and Java. The presentation will provide: an overview to general features of MongoDB, such as the structure of the data and how to manipulate it; some basics around the high availability and scalability features; and, of course, how to develop against the database from Java, Scala and the rich JVM ecosystem

CLOJURE SCRIPT

Node.js is really hip these days. Of course, a barrier to adoption for any sensible programmer is the fact that while the opportunities it provides for network programming are shiny and brilliant, it expects you to write your code in Javascript, a language born with so many design flaws it makes you pine for the halcyon days of COBOL.

Clojure has a solution to the Javascript problem for a while now, though. It's called ClojureScript, and, oddly, even though it's supported Node as a compilation target almost from the start, the thriving ecosystem of ClojureScript-on-Node tools and libraries you'd expect to spring out of that has been curiously absent.

Today, I will start with very quick overview of Clojure and what makes it different with ClojureScript. Then, let's join pre-existing Node infrastructure to client-side ClojureScript tools and see if we can build a fully functional 100% CLJS web application.

Ross

Ross is a Driver Engineer based in London, working on both the Python and the Scala drivers. With over 10 years experience in web development Ross holds a deep passion for web development. Previously, Ross was the Software Architect for Streetlife and prior to that Ross was the lead developer for Europes largest commercial radio station owner - Global Radio Ltd.

Bodil

Bodil is a developer, frequent speaker and occasional teacher of web technology and anything that favours s-expressions. Her current obsession is development workflow, and her current experiment to that end is the Catnip editor for Clojure. She lives in Oslo, Norway in a wary relationship with her pet Roomba.
